What BTL marketing is and how it differs from advertising
BTL stands for below the line. It covers sampling, in-store promotions, events, shelf and display work, and promoter consultations. What they share is personal contact. TV, radio and outdoor advertising, known as ATL, speak to everyone at once. BTL speaks to one person, often at the moment they stand at a shelf and choose.
Neither is better by default. ATL builds awareness, while BTL helps with the next step: trying, comparing, buying. For a small or mid-sized company there is another practical advantage. You can limit the budget to a single store or one district of Tashkent and see what happens before committing more.
What problems BTL can solve
A promotion without a goal is just spending. Before launching, decide what you actually want:
One activation rarely does everything. Pick the main goal, and let it guide your choice of mechanic and location.
- introduce a new product;
- push people toward a first purchase;
- lift sales in specific points of sale;
- collect contacts and feedback;
- build an emotional connection with the brand.
Where BTL works best
It is strongest where a product has to be experienced to be judged: food, drinks, cosmetics, personal care. It also suits launches that shoppers have not heard of yet, and impulse items picked up at the checkout without planning. On a crowded shelf, a few words from a well-prepared promoter can tip the choice.
Footfall matters just as much. The location must gather your target audience. A sweets tasting at the entrance of a family supermarket on a weekend and the same tasting in an office building on a weekday are two different experiments. In B2B, BTL looks different: a stand at an industry exhibition, an equipment demo, meetings with buyers. The value lies in the conversation and in contacts that later turn into deals.
How to prepare a BTL activation
Preparation takes longer than the activation itself. The minimum checklist:
The promoter is the face of the brand. If they do not know the ingredients, the price and the terms, even a clever mechanic will fail. Give them a short briefing and a simple script: how to greet, what to say in a few seconds, how to answer common questions.
- a goal and a success metric: what exactly counts as a result;
- a mechanic: a gift, a discount on the second item, a prize draw, a sample;
- a place and time agreed with the store owner;
- promoters and their training;
- materials: samples, uniforms, flyers with one specific offer;
- enough stock to cover a possible spike in demand;
- a way to record results and who does it.
Field control and measuring results
Without control, part of the budget quietly disappears. Promoters leave early, flyers end up in the bin, samples go to friends. Photo reports in a Telegram group during the day, spot checks, and counts of distributed materials and units sold prevent most of this. Agree on it upfront, whether you work with a contractor or your own team.
To evaluate, compare sales at the store with the activation against a similar store without it, and compare the periods before, during and after. If sales dip afterwards, some purchases simply moved in time, and you should account for that.
Then add up the full cost: promoters, product and gifts, materials, venue, logistics. Compare it with extra profit, not revenue. A promo code or coupon mentioned at the till or in a Telegram ordering bot shows where a buyer came from. The number of contacts collected and repeat purchases show whether interest survived the event.
Common BTL mistakes
Most failures repeat themselves, and nearly all of them are predictable:
- no clear goal, so nothing to measure;
- promoters who are untrained and do not know the product;
- a mechanic that attracts gift hunters instead of buyers;
- empty shelves during the promotion;
- no agreement with the store about space and display.
Combining BTL with other channels
BTL grows stronger alongside advertising. An announcement in Instagram and a Telegram channel brings more people than a lone promoter at the door. Contacts gathered at an event can be used for later offers, but only with the person's consent. And the questions shoppers ask on the spot show what to fix in the product, price or packaging.
If you are unsure whether you need BTL at all, and at what scale, that is a strategy question rather than a one-off promotion. At markdev we help fit such activities into the wider marketing plan and decide in advance how to measure payback. Tell us about your product and points of sale, and we can discuss which small test to start with.
FAQ
What does BTL mean in marketing?
BTL means below the line: marketing built on direct contact with the customer, such as sampling, in-store promotions, events and promoter consultations. It contrasts with mass advertising on TV, radio and outdoor media.
Is BTL suitable for a small business?
Yes, if you start small. One location, a clear goal and simple tracking give an honest picture. Scale up only after the first test shows a result.
How do I know a promotion paid off?
Compare sales before, during and after the activation, and against a similar store without it. Then set the full cost against extra profit. Remember that some purchases may only have shifted in time.
What is the difference between BTL and ATL?
ATL is mass advertising that builds awareness. BTL works one to one and pushes toward a specific action, most often trying or buying the product.
