Why an idea alone is not enough
Many first businesses fail not because of poor execution but because the product was built in private and shown to buyers only after the lease, the renovation and the first big purchase. By then, changing direction is expensive, so the owner keeps spending on something the market does not want.
Treat every idea as a hypothesis. Your first job is not to build a company but to find out, as cheaply as possible, where the hypothesis is wrong.
Describe the idea through the customer
“I will open a children’s clothing store” describes a format, not a reason for anyone to visit. A stronger statement starts with a person and a frustration: parents of young children in Yunusabad find it hard to buy good clothing without touring markets. Write down answers to these questions:
- Who exactly is the customer, and where do they live or work
- What task are they trying to get done
- How do they do it today
- What is wrong with the current option
- Why would they choose you instead
What you can check from your desk
Look at who already operates nearby: maps, Instagram, Telegram channels, Uzum Market and OLX.uz. Read reviews and questions under similar products, because that is often where competitors’ weak spots show up. Type your topic into a search engine and study the suggestions to see which words people use, in Russian or in Uzbek.
An empty field is not good news by default. More often it means there is no demand, or there is a barrier you cannot yet see, such as licensing, logistics or low buyer trust.
Customer conversations and test sales
Talk to around ten people who resemble your future customer. Do not pitch the idea. Ask about the past: when they last faced this task, how they solved it, what annoyed them. Friends and relatives tend to be polite, so their opinion is a weak signal.
The strongest test is an attempt to sell before launch, and it needs no premises or warehouse:
- A Telegram channel or bot describing the offer and taking pre-orders
- An OLX.uz listing with a clear description and price
- A small batch sold through friends, Instagram or a marketplace
- A handful of services delivered manually to first clients, followed by candid feedback
Local market details to factor in
Many purchase decisions are discussed in Telegram, and recommendations from people buyers know often outweigh advertising. Click and Payme are familiar, yet cash on delivery remains popular, which affects returns and working capital. Tashkent and the regions differ in income, habits and channels, so a result in the capital does not guarantee the same one in Samarkand or Andijan.
Watch seasonality too: Ramadan, the wedding season and the start of the school year can change demand sharply. And check early whether your activity requires a particular registration type, a licence or certification.
Unit economics and the minimum version
You will not have precise numbers at the start, but you need the logic: what one order consists of (purchase cost, rent, delivery, payment and marketplace fees, taxes), roughly what it takes to win a customer, and whether that customer will return. If the model only works under very optimistic assumptions, rework the idea.
Then build the simplest version that solves the customer’s problem: a café with a short menu or made-to-order items, a small production batch at a contractor, a service done by hand before you automate it. It reveals real buyer behaviour while mistakes are still cheap.
Signs the idea works, and common mistakes
Good signs: people describe the problem in their own words, leave a prepayment or contact details, come back and bring friends, and you can explain how you differ from alternatives. Bad signs: lots of interest but no money, only you love the idea, a lease signed and a big batch bought immediately, or a foreign success copied without checking local demand.

FAQ
How much does it cost to test a business idea?
It depends on the niche, but testing usually costs far less than a full launch. A Telegram channel, a listing, a small batch or a manual service gives real data before you commit to rent or large purchases.
Is feedback from friends enough?
No. People close to you tend to support rather than challenge. Speak with people who resemble future customers and ask about their past experience, not about your idea.
What counts as proof of demand?
Action, not interest: a prepayment, a request with contact details, a repeat order or a referral. Likes and comments such as “sounds interesting” are not proof.
If an idea works in Tashkent, will it work in the regions?
Test it separately. Income, habits, communication channels and competition differ, so repeat the test locally or at least with a small group of customers there.
