Why every business owner should know CAC
Leads and reach say nothing about money. A shop in Tashkent can get dozens of Telegram and Direct messages a day and still win very few first-time buyers. CAC translates marketing into the language of the business: how many soums it takes before someone buys from you for the first time.
It is the main guide for budget decisions. Once you know CAC, you can tell whether to scale ads, which channel to stop, and the most you can afford to pay for a customer without losing money.
The CAC formula with an example
CAC = total acquisition costs in a period ÷ number of new customers in the same period. The word "new" matters: repeat purchases from existing customers don't belong in the denominator.
A hypothetical example: in one month a dental clinic spends 30 million soums on acquisition and 60 new patients attend a first appointment. CAC is 500 thousand soums. The figures are invented for illustration; yours will differ.
Count a customer as someone who paid, not someone who left a request. Cost per lead and CAC are different metrics, and the first one easily creates a false sense that everything is fine.
What to include in acquisition costs
This is where most people go wrong. Taking only the ad budget makes CAC look lower than it really is. Include everything you spend to get a new customer:
- ad spend on Meta, Google, Telegram and creators;
- fees for an agency, media buyer or freelancers;
- shooting, design, copywriting and creative production;
- marketing salaries and the share of sales salaries spent on new customers;
- CRM, mailing tools, chatbots and analytics;
- paid placements on marketplaces such as OLX or Uzum, if you use them.
CAC by channel and the delay before purchase
A blended CAC averages everything and hides the truth. Calculate it separately for paid social, search, SEO, referrals and Telegram channels. Often one channel brings customers far cheaper than another, and moving budget between them helps more than months of tweaking ads. This requires knowing where each customer came from: UTM tags, separate phone numbers and a mandatory "how did you hear about us" field in the CRM.
Also account for delay. Someone may see an ad in one month and buy in the next, especially for expensive purchases like renovation, equipment or property. For channels with a long decision cycle, calculate CAC over a longer window, otherwise the numbers will jump around.
CAC vs LTV: when a customer is worth the price
CAC alone is neither good nor bad. It is compared with LTV, the profit a customer brings over the whole relationship. If CAC is close to LTV, you are not earning on new customers. If LTV is clearly higher, you have room to invest more.
That is why a coffee shop with regular guests can afford a pricier customer than a store selling one-off items. Compare profit per customer, not revenue: with a thin margin even a moderate CAC can lose money.
How to lower CAC without losing quality
The fastest gain is often in sales, not in ads. If managers reply after several hours or requests get lost in chats, every paid click is wasted and every customer costs more. Check these in order:
- speed and quality of replies to requests;
- conversion at each funnel step: site, form, call, visit;
- landing pages and the offer itself;
- audience targeting, and weak channels that should be switched off;
- referrals and loyalty programs, since customers who come through friends are cheaper.
Track CAC every month
Calculate CAC monthly for each channel and watch the trend. A rise is a signal that the channel is saturating, auction competition has grown or the sales team is slipping. Remember the flip side too: if you cut CAC by attracting less valuable customers, such as discount hunters, LTV will fall. Look at both metrics together.
To make this work without manual spreadsheets, you need end-to-end analytics that links ads, CRM and payments. The markdev team helps set it up, along with reporting, for businesses in Uzbekistan. Tell us about your task and we will work out where to start.
FAQ
What is CAC in simple terms?
It is the average amount you spend to get one new paying customer. You divide acquisition costs by the number of new customers in the same period.
How is CAC different from cost per lead?
Cost per lead shows the price of a contact, while CAC shows the price of someone who actually bought. Some leads never pay, so CAC is always higher and closer to reality.
What is a good CAC?
There is no universal number. The benchmark is LTV: if a customer brings clearly more profit than it costs to acquire them, the figure is acceptable.
How often should I calculate CAC?
Monthly, per channel. For channels with a long decision cycle, also look at a longer period to account for the gap between the ad and the purchase.
