Google Analytics dashboard for SEO: what to include

A Google Analytics dashboard for SEO puts search visibility, site behaviour and leads on one screen, so nobody has to rebuild a spreadsheet every month. Here is what to connect, how to lay it out and which mistakes make these reports useless.

Why a Google Analytics dashboard matters for SEO

In many companies the monthly SEO report is a manual job: export from Search Console, copy numbers from Google Analytics, paste everything into a sheet, draw charts. It takes hours, and small errors creep in, such as mismatched date ranges or a mistyped figure. The owner ends up with a file that neither side fully trusts.

A dashboard removes that routine. Data refreshes on its own, the report is always current, and the owner can open it from a link on a phone. One caveat: GA4 shows what visitors do on the site, but it does not show search queries or rankings. That is why SEO dashboards are usually built in the free Looker Studio, which connects GA4 with Search Console.

Which data sources to connect

Looker Studio has built-in connectors for Google products, so a basic version needs no development.

  • GA4: organic sessions, engagement and key events, such as form submissions, calls, taps on a Telegram button or payments through Click or Payme.
  • Search Console: queries, pages, impressions, clicks, CTR and average position.
  • Google Sheets: anything the first two cannot supply, for example rankings from a tracking tool, CRM deals or exported Yandex data.

How to structure the pages

A good dashboard has several pages with different depth. The first is for the director, the rest are for the specialist.

The summary page holds a few cards: search clicks, organic sessions and organic key events, each compared with the previous period. Next to them goes a trend chart covering at least a year, so seasonality is visible. A Tashkent clothing store, for instance, sees demand rise before holidays regardless of SEO, and without a yearly view that bump is easy to mistake for progress.

  • Queries: a Search Console table with clicks, impressions, CTR and position, plus a branded versus non-branded switch.
  • Pages: landing pages with search clicks and GA4 key events, grouped by site section.
  • Devices and regions: mobile against desktop, and a city breakdown, which matters if you sell beyond the capital.

Branded queries, site sections and filters

The most useful single decision is to separate branded from non-branded queries. Branded searches contain your company name and its spelling variants, in Latin and Cyrillic. Their growth usually reflects awareness from ads, Instagram or word of mouth. Growth in non-branded clicks is what SEO actually earns. In Looker Studio this is a calculated field based on the query text.

A second calculated field can group pages by URL: an address containing /services/ becomes Services, /blog/ becomes Blog, /catalog/ becomes Catalog. You then track sections instead of hundreds of individual pages. On a bilingual site, the same trick separates the Uzbek and Russian versions.

Add a date picker, device filter and section filter, and switch on comparison with the previous period and with last year. Then the owner can answer routine questions without writing to a specialist.

Common mistakes

The problems are rarely technical. They usually come from the approach.

  • Search Console and GA4 data blended into one table, although the tools count different things: search clicks and site sessions need not match.
  • Too many charts on one page, so the key figure gets lost.
  • No comparison with earlier periods, which leaves every number without context.
  • Huge query tables with no limits, making the report slow to load.
  • A dashboard built on one specialist’s personal account.

Access, Yandex and data limits

Looker Studio data sources run with the permissions of whoever connected them. If that person leaves and loses access to GA4 or Search Console, the charts go blank. Build the dashboard and its sources on a company account, give the team view-only access and keep editing rights with one responsible person.

If part of your audience comes from Yandex, a Google-only dashboard shows an incomplete picture. A simple approach is to export clicks and impressions from Webmaster and visits with goals from Metrica into a Google Sheet on a schedule, then connect that sheet as a source.

Know the limits too. Search Console hides rare queries and averages position, and GA4 does not show which query brought a visitor. A query can be tied to a lead only through the landing page.

Where to start

Do not build everything at once. Make a single summary page, show it to the owner and write down the questions that come up: why clicks dropped, which pages bring leads, how the Uzbek version performs. Add pages only to answer those questions. A dashboard that grows from real questions gets opened. One built just in case usually does not.

FAQ

Can I build an SEO dashboard in Google Analytics alone?

Only partly. GA4 shows organic sessions and key events but not queries, impressions or positions. For the full picture, Search Console is added, usually through Looker Studio.

Is Looker Studio free?

Looker Studio itself is free, as are its built-in GA4 and Search Console connectors. Costs appear if you need third-party connectors or specialist setup time.

Why do Search Console and GA4 numbers differ?

They measure different things. Search Console counts clicks in search results, while GA4 counts sessions and events on your site. They should not match exactly, so compare the trend of each one.

How do I avoid losing the dashboard when an employee leaves?

Create the dashboard and its data sources on a company account instead of a personal one, and give everyone else view-only access.
