Google Search Console and Yandex Webmaster: Do You Need Both?

Google Search Console and Yandex Webmaster are free dashboards where search engines tell you how they see your website: which pages are indexed, which queries they appear for, and what blocks crawling. Here is what the two tools share, where they differ, and how to run both without turning it into a second job.

Why one dashboard is not enough

Each search engine has its own crawler, its own index and its own audience. Google reports only on Google, and Yandex only on Yandex. A page that ranks quietly in one can be excluded in the other, and without the dashboard you would rarely find out.

In Uzbekistan many people search in both Russian and Uzbek, some in Google and some in Yandex. Which engine brings your business more customers is something your analytics will show, not a general assumption. Connecting both tools is worth it either way: they cost nothing, and warnings about problems are sent only there.

What the two tools have in common

The core feature set is nearly the same, so once you know one dashboard the other feels familiar.

  • Site ownership verification via a meta tag, an HTML file or a DNS record
  • Search query reports with impressions, clicks, CTR and average position
  • Index coverage and the reasons pages are excluded
  • Sitemap submission and status checks
  • Single-URL inspection and requests to recrawl a page
  • Alerts about security issues and penalties
  • Access for several team members

What only Google Search Console offers

Search Console is stronger when you need technical depth and a long data history. It is the place to work out why a page is not indexed, or which rare queries bring in a small but relevant stream of visitors.

  • Core Web Vitals based on real Chrome users
  • Reports on structured data and rich results
  • Domain-level property covering every protocol and subdomain
  • Filters by country, device and search type: web, image, video, news
  • A change-of-address tool for moving to a new domain

What only Yandex Webmaster offers

Webmaster earns its place when region, company data and products matter. If you sell in one city, such as Tashkent or Samarkand, region settings have a practical purpose.

  • IKS, Yandex's site quality score
  • Region settings and verification
  • Organization data and product feed connections
  • Saved queries and query groups for ongoing tracking
  • Server response and mobile page checks as the Yandex robot sees them

Why the numbers never match

Indexed page counts, clicks and positions almost always differ between the two tools. The reasons are ordinary: different audiences, different indexing rules, different ways of calculating position. In both dashboards rare queries are hidden and positions are averaged.

So do not compare absolute figures. Compare trends and look for gaps. If a page is in Google but Yandex excluded it, check robots.txt, server responses, duplicates and content quality. If clicks fall sharply in one dashboard and not the other, the cause usually sits with that search engine or with settings that affect its crawler.

A simple routine for running both

A short routine keeps you from opening the dashboards only after leads have dropped.

  • Connect both tools before any promotion starts, under a company account rather than a contractor's personal email
  • Submit your sitemap to both
  • Review alerts and click trends once a week
  • Once a month, merge queries and errors into one spreadsheet
  • After site changes, test key pages with each URL inspection tool

Which one matters more for your site

Open your analytics and see what share of search traffic each engine sends. The split can differ between Russian and Uzbek pages, and more again between industries. Give most of your attention to the dashboard that brings more customers, but do not drop the other one.

At markdev we connect both tools during turnkey website development: we set up the sitemap, access rights and basic checks so the owner can see from day one how search engines treat the project. If you want to make sense of what your dashboards are telling you, or you are planning a new site, send us the task and we will talk through where to start.

FAQ

Should I connect Yandex Webmaster if my customers come from Google?

Yes. It is free, part of your audience, especially Russian speakers, uses Yandex, and Webmaster flags problems you might otherwise never notice.

Why do positions differ between Search Console and Yandex Webmaster?

They are separate search engines with different algorithms, audiences and calculation methods. Compare trends, not absolute numbers.

How do I verify site ownership?

With a meta tag in the page code, a file uploaded to the server, or a DNS record. A domain-level property in Search Console can be verified only through DNS.

How often should I check the dashboards?

Alerts and click trends once a week works well, with a full review of queries and errors once a month.
