Where a gym really loses members
Many clubs message a client at one moment only: when the membership is about to expire. By then the outcome is mostly decided. Someone who trained regularly will renew without a nudge. Someone who has not shown up for a month will not renew, even with a discount.
So gym SMS marketing should follow the whole member journey, from the first week to the return after leaving. Early on, the goal is not to sell but to help the habit stick by removing small barriers: awkwardness, not knowing the gym, an inconvenient time.
Six message scenarios for different stages
One blast to the entire database is rarely useful. You need several short sequences that start from an event: a purchase, a missed visit, an approaching end date.
- New member: a thank-you after the first visit, an invitation to an intro session, the beginner class schedule, then a check-in on how it is going.
- Class booking: a short reminder on the day, so fewer people no-show and the spot can go to someone else.
- Member who stopped coming: a message after the first noticeable gap, offering a new programme or a more convenient time.
- Membership ending: an early heads-up, then a closer reminder, with options to renew, switch plan or freeze.
- Former member: one or two invitations to return, such as a trial class or a new direction, then a pause.
- Service news: a new coach, a schedule change, a zone closed for repairs.
How to write texts people do not resent
A message to a member who vanished should never sound like a reproach. Compare «You have not been here for two weeks» with «Dilnoza, we opened a morning group that fits before work. Want to try it? Reply 1». The second gives a reason to come back, not a feeling of guilt.
Use the name, mention the club and offer one clear step: reply with a digit, sign up at reception, come to a trial class. Do not mix a reminder, a promotion and news in one text. And do not reduce everything to a renewal discount: for someone who is not training, a discount solves nothing.
Timing and frequency
People in Tashkent train in the morning, at lunch or after work, so send the message before the usual workout hour, not during it. Avoid late evenings and very early mornings.
Keep promotional texts rare, since too many push people to opt out. Service messages, such as a class reminder or a membership date, go out when needed. Never send the expiry warning on the last day: the member has no time left to decide.
SMS, Telegram and the human touch
Schedules and news fit well in a Telegram channel or bot, while SMS is better kept for personal and important messages: membership dates, reminders, invitations to return. If members book through a bot, send the class reminder there and use SMS as a backup.
Automation does not replace people. A missed-visits message lands harder when it is followed by a call from the front desk or a note from a coach the member already knows. Name someone responsible for winning back lapsed members and give them a weekly list with contacts.
Consent, data and what to measure
When selling a membership, ask for consent to service messages and, separately, to offers. A member who wants only class reminders should not receive promotions. Give a simple way to opt out of advertising.
These scenarios work only if the club records visits and membership dates. Without that you cannot tell who stopped coming. Track the share of new members still training after a month, the renewal share and the number of people who returned after a missed-visit message, and compare against the period before launch.
Where to start
Begin with two sequences: a new member's first weeks and outreach to members who have gone quiet. They show the clearest effect and need no complex systems. Add the rest as your record keeping improves.

FAQ
How often can a gym send SMS to members?
Service messages such as class and membership reminders can go out when needed. Keep promotional texts rare, otherwise members will opt out.
When should I contact a member who stopped coming?
As soon as possible after the first noticeable gap, while the habit still exists. Winning someone back after several months is much harder.
Do I need consent to send SMS to members?
Yes. Ask for consent to service messages and, separately, to promotional offers when selling the membership, and provide a clear way to opt out.
Is SMS better than Telegram for a gym?
They complement each other. Telegram suits schedules and news, SMS suits personal and important messages such as membership dates and invitations to return.
