What a lead generation business actually sells
A lead is a contact from a person who showed interest: a form submission, a Telegram or Instagram message, a phone call. The client is not paying for impressions or clicks. They are paying for a chance to talk to a likely buyer.
That means you are responsible for more than traffic. The enquiry has to match what the company really sells. For the client this is convenient, since they only track the cost of an enquiry. For you it is both an opportunity and a risk, because ad spend leaves your account before the client pays.
Payment models and who carries the risk
Choosing a model is really choosing who pays when something goes wrong.
- Pay per lead: a fixed amount for each enquiry that meets the agreed criteria.
- Pay per qualified lead: only enquiries that pass a check are billed.
- Pay per sale: a share of the deal or a fixed fee for each customer who buys.
- Monthly retainer: the client pays for work against a plan, often with ad budget billed separately.
- Hybrid: a small base fee plus a bonus for results.
What your economics are made of
Revenue is the fee per lead or per sale. Costs are wider than they look: ad budget, a landing page or quiz, a CRM, specialists' time and, if needed, an operator who phones new enquiries to qualify them. Duplicates, wrong numbers and off-target requests add losses, because clients refuse to pay for them.
Margin is what remains, and rising ad prices can erase it quickly. Calculate per client and per channel rather than from market averages, keep a reserve for rejected leads, and remember that payments in soums through Click or Payme can still arrive late.
Lead quality: what to put in writing before you start
Most disputes sound alike. The client says the leads are bad, and the agency says the client handles them badly. Settle these points in the contract or an appendix:
- what counts as a lead: required fields, region, service;
- which enquiries are not billed: duplicates, spam, wrong numbers, unrelated requests;
- how long the client has to report a bad lead and how it is confirmed;
- how quickly the client commits to calling back;
- how and when the client shares feedback on sales.
Niches and channels that fit the Uzbek market
Lead generation works where a customer is valuable to the client, the decision takes time, competition is crowded and the client can process requests. In Tashkent and the regions that often means private clinics and dental practices, developers, training centres, renovation, car services and B2B services. A narrow focus helps you understand the audience and find working approaches faster.
Channels vary: Instagram targeting, Google Ads, your own sites, quizzes, Telegram channels and bots that collect requests, content. Each one produces a different quality of enquiry, so track results by channel and avoid relying on a single source. Platform rules change without notice.
Legal and ethical limits
Get people's consent to process and pass on their data, and check current personal data requirements with a lawyer. Do not resell the same lead to several companies behind their backs, do not collect enquiries in the name of a brand you do not represent, and do not promise in ads what the client does not offer. Shortcuts like these turn into reputation damage quickly.
How to start a lead generation business
Pick one niche and one city you understand. Offer the first client a trial period on clear terms, set up one or two channels, collect data on quality and build a feedback loop on sales. Only then take on more clients in the same niche.
If you are unsure which payment model or niche your numbers can support, it helps to work it out at the strategy level. markdev offers marketing strategy and consulting for businesses in Uzbekistan, and we are happy to discuss your idea and test the economics before you spend on ads.
FAQ
What is a lead in simple terms?
A contact from a person who showed interest in a product by leaving a request, calling or writing. Both sides should define in writing what counts as a lead.
Which payment model is safest for a beginner?
A retainer or hybrid model, because part of your income does not depend on the client's sales team. Pay per sale ties you closely to someone else's processes.
What should I do about low-quality leads?
Agree in advance which enquiries are not billed and how long the client has to report them. Without this, a dispute is almost certain.
Can one lead be sold to several companies?
Only if every party knows about it and the person has agreed to their data being shared. Hidden resale damages trust and creates legal risk.
