How marketplace advertising works in Uzbekistan
Three separate jobs usually hide behind the phrase. The first is on-platform promotion: paid placements in search results and the advertising tools the platform itself offers, where they are available for your category. The second is the product card: title, photos, description, price, stock status and reviews. This often matters more than budget, because a weak card turns every paid click into wasted money.
The third job is external traffic. You send people from Instagram, a Telegram channel or search to your product page on the platform. Ad cabinet rules and formats change from time to time, so check current conditions on the platform itself rather than relying on old advice.
Where marketplace ads hit a ceiling
A marketplace is rented space. The platform sets the commission, the display rules, the return conditions and the requirements for product listings. Your product sits next to competing offers, and a shopper can switch to a cheaper option in one tap.
The biggest limit is that the customer stays the platform's customer, not yours. You have no contact details, so you cannot announce a new batch or remind someone to reorder. You also depend on the platform's algorithm: if ranking logic changes or click costs rise, your results can drop without any change on your side.
Why your own website belongs next to a marketplace
A website does not replace marketplaces. It covers what they do not give you, because here you set the rules. In Tashkent and the regions alike, many buyers arrive from Instagram or Telegram and want to choose and pay quickly.
- a catalog with your brand, Uzbek and Russian descriptions, and your own pricing policy;
- orders and payments through Click or Payme, independent of another platform's rules;
- contact capture through forms, calls or a Telegram bot, so you can bring buyers back without paying for the click again;
- a Meta pixel and Google tags for retargeting and end-to-end analytics;
- pages built for search queries that bring visitors without per-click payment;
- a wholesale section with price lists, terms and a request form, which is awkward to run on a marketplace.
How to tell if the advertising pays back
The ad budget is only one part of your costs. Add product cost, platform commission, logistics and storage, packaging, returns, staff time and the advertising itself. Only then can you see what one order really earns and how much you can afford to spend to win it.
The yardstick is profit per som spent, not clicks or impressions. If the platform does not show the full picture of your buyers, keep your own records: UTM tags on external links, an order sheet, and properly configured analytics on your site. Without basic analytics you cannot tell whether advertising pays back or the budget is simply being spent.
A short plan to get started
Do not try to promote your whole range at once. Start with a small test and decide based on actual profit.
- pick a few products with steady demand and a clear margin;
- prepare the cards: good photos, a clear description, current price and stock;
- work out the maximum acceptable cost per order after all commissions;
- run a small ad test and compare it with organic sales;
- build a showcase website in parallel and connect analytics;
- send part of your Instagram and Telegram traffic to your site, not only to the platform;
- review your range and budget monthly by profit rather than turnover.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is switching on ads before the product card is ready. The second is counting turnover instead of profit and celebrating orders that earn nothing. The third is putting everything on one platform with no customer base and no sales channel of your own.
The fourth is building a website just to have one. Many shoppers browse on smartphones and arrive from messengers, so the page must load fast, show the price and let people order in a few taps. Otherwise the site will not work as a channel.
How we approach it
At markdev we build websites on a turnkey basis and set up advertising and end-to-end analytics around them, so marketplaces become one sales channel rather than the only one. We do not promise guaranteed sales, but we show the numbers and explain what a result is made of.
If you want to discuss how to combine marketplaces with your own website, send us a request and we will go through the task with you.
FAQ
Do I need a website if I already sell on a marketplace?
It is advisable. A marketplace supplies traffic but does not hand you the customer. Your own site lets you collect contacts, take orders directly, run retargeting and avoid depending on one platform's rules.
What budget should I start marketplace advertising with?
There is no universal amount. First calculate the acceptable cost per order after commissions, logistics and returns, then run a small test on a few products and scale only what brings profit.
How is marketplace advertising different from Instagram ads?
On a marketplace, people have already come to buy and are comparing offers. On Instagram you build interest and lead people to a product page or website. The two channels complement each other.
How do I know my advertising pays back?
Compare the profit from orders that came through ads with all the costs of those ads. That requires UTM tags, order records and website analytics. Turnover and clicks alone say nothing about payback.
