Marketplace Packaging in Uzbekistan: Protect, Label, Impress

Marketplace packaging has to do more than look neat. On a platform such as Uzum, your product passes through a seller warehouse, a platform warehouse, sorting, a truck and a pickup point before a buyer touches it. If the packaging cannot survive that route, or does not fit the platform's rules, you pay for it in returns, bad reviews and a weaker product card.

Three jobs your packaging must do

The first job is protection: the product has to arrive intact. The second is compliance: the warehouse must be able to identify and accept every unit without extra handling. The third is impression: the box is the only physical contact between a buyer and your brand, because they never meet you.

A failure in any one of the three shows up the same way, as a complaint in the reviews.

Protection on a long route, and a simple test

Boxes get stacked, moved and carried alongside other cargo, not always gently. Design for rough handling, not ideal conditions. Practical basics:

  • a box sized to the product: too big and it rattles, too small and it deforms
  • void fill such as bubble wrap, paper filler or card inserts
  • protection for corners and protruding parts
  • moisture protection for clothing, textiles and anything that dislikes damp
  • tape that holds when the box is shaken and moved

Test before your first shipment

You do not need a lab. Pack the product exactly as you plan to send it, drop the box from waist height, shake it and put a weight on top. If something knocks, shifts or crushes, it will do the same in transit. Test several units, not just one lucky sample.

Fragile goods, liquids and cosmetics

Glass, ceramics, electronics and cosmetics in bottles need extra care. Wrap each item separately, add several layers of cushioning and use a rigid outer box. For liquids, a tightly closed cap plus a sealed bag protects against leaks.

A “fragile” sticker helps a little, but nobody is obliged to react to it. The packaging should protect the item even if nobody is careful.

Platform rules, labels and barcodes

Each marketplace sets its own requirements for individual unit packaging, cartons sent to its warehouse, weight and size. These change, so rely only on the current instructions in your seller account and read them before the first shipment. Breaking them usually means a rejected delivery, delays or penalties.

Pay particular attention to labels. A barcode must be printed at the right size and quality, stay flat and not glare under plastic film, otherwise the scanner fails and the item can get lost in the warehouse. Besides the barcode, you will typically need a product name, article number, size or colour, producer or seller details and whatever your category requires by law. If you sell a set, fix the items together and label it as one kit.

What packaging does to your margin

On many platforms logistics fees depend on size and weight, so every extra centimetre of box adds cost to every order, paid in so‘m. Choose a few box sizes for your range, compare prices and weights across suppliers and buy materials in batches.

Do not save at the expense of protection, though: one damaged return usually costs more than the price difference in cardboard. Also read your return reasons. If “arrived damaged”, “torn package” or “incomplete set” keep repeating, change the packaging for that specific reason and compare the next batches.

First impression, eco angle and strategy

A clean box, easy opening without scissors and a short thank-you card or care instruction raise the chance of a good review. It costs little; what matters is that it is thought through. Before asking for a review or pointing buyers to your Instagram or Telegram, check the platform rules, since some limit such requests. Paper filler and recyclable cardboard help your reputation too, as long as protection does not suffer: a broken product and a second delivery create more waste than one extra sheet of paper.

Packaging touches price, logistics, reviews and rating, so it is awkward to solve in isolation. markdev helps business owners in Uzbekistan build a marketing strategy: working out where packaging affects margin and tying it to product cards and review handling. FAQ

Where should I start before my first marketplace shipment?

Read the packaging requirements in your seller account, then pack several units and test them with a waist-height drop, a shake and a weight on top.

Do I need branded packaging for a marketplace?

Not at first. Protection and compliance with platform rules come first. Add a branded bag or card once the basics work and the budget allows.

How does packaging affect logistics cost?

On many platforms fees depend on size and weight. An oversized box raises storage and delivery costs on every order, so match the box to the product.

What if buyers keep reporting damage?

Collect the return and review reasons, find the repeating problem, change the packaging to address it and compare results on the next batches.
