Meta Tags for SEO: What to Fill In and What to Skip

Meta tags for SEO are small lines of code in the head of a page. Visitors never see them, yet they shape how your site looks in Google and how a link appears when someone shares it in Telegram. Here is which tags matter for a business in Uzbekistan and which ones you can safely ignore.

Why business owners should care about meta tags

Meta tags are read by search engine crawlers, browsers and messengers, not by people. They tell a search engine what to show in results, which version of a page is the main one, and whether a page should be indexed at all.

This is not a technical footnote. A customer in Tashkent or Samarkand types a query, scans a handful of headlines and picks one within seconds. If yours is cut off, reads like a keyword list or is identical on every page, the click goes to a competitor, however good your site is.

Title and description: your shop window in search

The title tag is the most important of them. It becomes the headline of your search result and helps the engine understand the topic. Put the main phrase near the start and write the title as a promise to a person, not a string of queries. Long titles get truncated, so lead with what matters.

The description does not move rankings directly, but it influences whether people click. Say what the visitor gets, what sets you apart, and mention the city, delivery or payment by Click and Payme if that is true. Search engines sometimes replace your text with their own snippet. That is normal, though a strong description raises the chance yours is used.

  • Give every page its own title and description
  • Use the key phrase naturally, without repeating it
  • Put the brand name at the end of the title
  • Avoid all caps and exclamation marks
  • Make sure the description matches what is actually on the page

Robots and canonical: controlling what gets indexed

The robots tag tells crawlers whether to index a page and follow its links. Noindex removes a page from search, nofollow asks crawlers not to follow links. They suit carts, account areas, internal search results and technical duplicates.

A classic mistake: the site is built on a test address with indexing blocked, and the noindex stays after launch. Ads and content are fine, yet the site stays invisible for months. Check this tag after every release.

Canonical matters when the same page opens at several addresses, for example with filter parameters, UTM tags from ads, or with and without a trailing slash. It points to the main address so the page's strength is not split and the right version appears in search.

Viewport, hreflang and Open Graph

Viewport makes a page display properly on a phone. Many of your customers browse on smartphones, and without it the site looks like a shrunken desktop page.

If the site runs in Russian and Uzbek, hreflang links the language versions. Search engines then treat them as translations rather than duplicates and can show each visitor the version that suits them.

Open Graph sets the title, description and image when a link is shared in Telegram, Facebook and elsewhere. Links travel through chats and channels constantly here, and a tidy preview feels more trustworthy than a bare URL. It does not affect rankings, but it does affect clicks.

Outdated meta tags you can stop worrying about

Major search engines have long ignored the keywords tag for ranking. Filling it in brings nothing, and a long list can show competitors the terms you target. Tags like revisit-after and author are equally irrelevant.

If a plugin or a former developer added them, there is no emergency. Just do not spend time on them. The same effort put into the titles of your key pages pays back far more.

Templates for large sites and online stores

With thousands of products you cannot write every tag by hand, so tags are generated from templates, for instance category name, key phrase and city. The point is that a template must produce unique, sensible results and not output nonsense when a field is empty.

Write the homepage, main categories and the landing pages you send ad traffic to by hand. Those pages bring most enquiries, so each headline deserves attention.

How to audit your tags and where to start

A site crawler walks through your pages like a robot and flags empty, duplicate and overly long titles and descriptions, as well as pages marked noindex. Google Search Console reports some indexing problems too. A sensible order is: export all pages, check which are blocked from the index, remove duplicates, rewrite tags on the main pages, then set up previews for messengers.

FAQ

Which meta tags matter most for SEO?

Title first, then description, robots and canonical. The rest support correct display on phones, in multilingual versions and on social platforms.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly, but it affects whether people click your result. A good description can bring more visits from the same position.

Should I fill in the keywords meta tag?

No. Major search engines do not use it for ranking, and a list of terms can reveal your targeting to competitors.

Why is my published site not showing in search?

A common cause is a leftover noindex tag or a block in robots.txt from development. Check your page code and the Search Console reports.
