What press release distribution is and when you need it
Press release distribution means sending company news to journalists, editors and admins of niche channels. The goal is not to reach the most inboxes but to put the story in front of people who care about it. When the same email goes to everyone, editors stop opening it, and your company name becomes a signal to skip.
You need it when there is a real news hook: a new branch in a regional city, a new service launch, Click and Payme payments arriving where they were not available before, a partnership, a research finding, a social project. A discount or “the best quality” is not news. It is advertising, and editors will treat it that way.
How to build a media list that works
Start with a question rather than addresses: what does your audience read and forward? A shop in Samarkand needs a different list from an IT company in Tashkent. Then find out who in each newsroom actually covers your topic, by industry, city and format. Where to look for contacts:
Do not buy ready-made lists. They go stale, ignore topics and language, and emails from unknown senders often end up in spam. Keep your own list in a spreadsheet or a simple CRM: outlet or channel, language (Uzbek, Russian or both), name and role, topics covered, preferred contact method, and history, meaning what you sent, whether they replied and whether anything was published.
Treat Telegram as a first-class channel. In Uzbekistan a lot of business, city and industry news spreads through channels, so they belong in your list alongside traditional media.
- author bylines and the “Contacts” or “Editorial” pages of news sites
- journalists’ profiles on Instagram, Telegram and LinkedIn
- Telegram channel descriptions, which usually list an ads or cooperation contact
- press conferences, trade shows and industry forums
- recommendations from partners and colleagues
Segment the list: one story, different emails
One story is rarely relevant to everyone. Split the list into groups and change the opening of your email for each:
Opening a pickup point for marketplace sellers in a regional centre is news for regional outlets and small-business channels, but probably not for a construction magazine. Five precise emails beat fifty random ones.
- business and economy media: what the news means for the market
- industry media: the technology, product or figures professionals care about
- city and regional media: what changes for residents of a specific place
- Telegram channels and bloggers: a short point and easy-to-use visuals
How to write the pitch email
The subject line should state the news, not the company name. Weak: “Press release from Company N”. Stronger: “A repair workshop for electric scooters with a warranty opens in Fergana” (a hypothetical example).
Open with the person’s name and one or two sentences on why you are writing to them specifically, for example because they recently covered delivery or small business. Then give the news immediately, without a long company history. What to include:
- the press release in the body of the email, not only as an attachment, since attachments from unknown senders often go unopened
- a link to good-quality photos and video instead of heavy files
- an offer of an interview or an expert comment
- a name, phone number and Telegram contact
- a separate email to each recipient, never an open list of addresses in CC
Timing, exclusives and embargoes
Send on working days, in the first half of the day, so the journalist has time to prepare a piece. Friday evening, the eve of holidays and days dominated by major events are poor choices. If the news is tied to a date, send it ahead of time and say when it can be published.
An exclusive means offering the story to one outlet before the others. An embargo is a request not to publish until an agreed time, and it works only with journalists who already trust you. Never promise an exclusive to several newsrooms at once. People find out quickly, and your reputation suffers.
After sending: staying off the blacklist
The work does not end when you press send. What to do next:
Journalists blacklist senders for irrelevant news, too-frequent emails, pressure and demands to publish. A newsroom owes you nothing. Your job is to make the story easy and interesting to use.
- answer questions quickly, because journalists work to tight deadlines
- do not call to ask “did you get my email?”
- one follow-up is acceptable, and only when you have new information
- thank people for coverage and save the link in your list
- remove anyone who asks not to be contacted
How to measure results
After each round, record how many recipients you reached, who replied, who published and in what form, and whether you gained new contacts. After a few rounds you will see which stories work for which outlets and which part of your list is actually alive. That also ties PR to business goals such as brand awareness, inquiries and branded search queries.
Press release distribution works best as part of a wider strategy: when you know your audience, the news hooks coming in the next months, and how a website, social media and ads will support the coverage. FAQ
Should I buy a ready-made list of journalists?
No. Such lists age quickly, ignore topics and language, and emails sent from them often land in spam. A list you build yourself, with a history of contact, is more reliable.
Is it enough to attach the press release?
No. Put the text in the body of the email and treat the attachment as extra. Share photos and video as links so the email stays light.
How many follow-ups are acceptable?
One follow-up, and only if you have something new to add. Calling to ask whether the email arrived tends to damage the relationship.
Should Telegram channels be part of my distribution list?
Yes. Much business and city news in Uzbekistan spreads through channels. Choose those whose audience matches yours and write a short, separate email to each admin.
