What a clean URL does for your business
The benefit is more modest than some agencies claim, but it is practical. When a customer receives a link in a Telegram chat or an Instagram direct message, a readable address shows where it leads, and people click trusted-looking links more readily. A manager can read an address out over the phone, and whoever reads your analytics can tell at a glance that a line is the delivery page rather than something like page?id=48.
For search engines, the URL is only one weak signal. A keyword in the address will not rescue a page with thin content. Treat clean URLs as a matter of order and usability, not as a shortcut to higher rankings.
Rules for writing page addresses
A good address can be read aloud without confusion. Write a short set of rules, give it to your developer and content editor, and nobody will invent their own style a year from now.
- Use Latin letters in lowercase only; Cyrillic addresses turn into long strings of symbols when copied.
- Separate words with hyphens, not underscores or spaces.
- Keep it short: two to four words is usually enough.
- Describe the page: /contacts, /delivery-in-tashkent.
- Drop filler words and prepositions that add nothing.
- Avoid dates unless the content is tied to a date; a promotion ends, the address stays.
- Skip parameters and IDs wherever words can do the job.
Transliteration for Russian and Uzbek pages
In Uzbekistan most sites mix languages, so URL transliteration is a real decision. Russian words must be written in Latin letters using one chosen system. There is no single mandatory standard, but consistency matters: if one page says «sajt» and another «sayt», links become inconsistent and duplicates appear. Pick a system, write down how you treat letters such as ж, щ, ы, ю and я, and apply it everywhere.
Uzbek is simpler because the alphabet is already Latin. The trouble is the apostrophe in o‘ and g‘, which can turn into a strange character when a link is copied or shared. In URLs these letters are usually written as plain o and g, while sh, ch and ng stay as they are. What counts is that the rule is the same across the whole site.
Structure, depth and multilingual sites
An address can mirror the site structure: /services/, /blog/, /catalog/. That helps people and your own team find their way. But the deeper the folders, the longer the URL, and renaming one category then forces changes down the chain.
Online stores often hit a classic trap: one product sitting in several categories. If the path includes the category, that product ends up with several addresses. A short product address without the full category path, tied to a single page, is often the cleaner choice.
For a bilingual site, plan language versions in advance, for example a separate prefix such as /uz/ for the Uzbek version and addresses that use words natural to that language.
Should you change URLs on a live website
If a page already brings traffic and has links pointing to it, do not rename it just to add a keyword. The gain is uncertain and the risks are real: temporary ranking drops, broken links, gaps in analytics.
If a change is unavoidable, for instance when moving to a new CMS, follow a plan:
- build a table mapping every old address to its new one;
- set up a permanent 301 redirect from each old URL;
- update internal links, menus and breadcrumbs instead of relying on redirects;
- fix the sitemap and canonical tags;
- after launch, check for redirect chains and 404 errors.
Where to start
The easiest moment to get URLs right is before a new site goes live, when nothing has to be redone. For an existing project, start with an audit: which pages bring enquiries, where addresses are duplicated, where parameters and junk tails appear. Then decide case by case.

FAQ
What is an SEO friendly URL?
It is a page address built from readable words, such as /services/seo-audit, rather than a string of numbers and parameters like /index.php?id=152.
Do clean URLs improve rankings?
Only slightly. The address is one small signal, and page content matters far more. Clean URLs are mainly about usability and a tidy site structure.
How should I write Uzbek words in a URL?
Use Latin letters, drop the apostrophe in o‘ and g‘ (write o and g), and keep sh, ch and ng unchanged. Apply the same rule across the whole site.
Should I rename URLs on an existing site?
Only for a serious reason. If you do, add permanent 301 redirects and update internal links and the sitemap. Rankings may fluctuate for a while.
