When an SMM intern makes sense
An intern pays off where there is repeatable work and someone with time to explain it. If nobody in the company can spare even a short weekly check-in, wait: mistakes will reach published posts, and you will be the one fixing them in public.
There are two good reasons to bring one in. The first is to free up a specialist, or an owner who runs the page between sales. The second is to grow your own person who already knows your product, your customers and how you talk to them.
How to choose a candidate with no experience
A beginner's CV says very little, so look at how the person thinks. Give a small task that takes a couple of evenings and talk through the result face to face.
Judge logic, not polish: can they explain their choices, do they notice details, is their writing short and clean. Watch how they take criticism too. During an internship that matters more than any portfolio.
- Review the Instagram page of a local shop or café: what is clear, what stops a purchase
- Write three captions for one photo, each with a different goal
- Suggest a week of Stories ideas for your niche
- Find five questions customers ask in competitors' comments
First tasks: mistakes that clients never see
Start with work you check before it becomes public. The intern learns to read a page the way an analyst does, and the brand's reputation stays safe.
For every task, show an example of a good result in advance. A request like “think of something interesting” with no sample almost always ends in a redo.
- Collect references: competitor pages, strong Reels, Stories formats
- Build a table of last month's posts with reach and saves
- Draft captions from an approved content plan
- List frequent questions from Direct and comments
- Check hashtags and location tags for unrelated posts
What an intern should not handle
Some areas carry too high a price for error. Keep replies to complaints and negative reviews, unapproved promotion announcements and any figure the intern cannot verify away from them: price, address, instalment terms, Click or Payme payment details.
Grant access through Meta Business Suite roles, never by sending a password in a messenger. An ad account with a linked card is better left closed to interns altogether. Remove access on the day the internship ends.
Training: explain, don't just fix
Write one short document: how the brand speaks to customers, which topics are off limits, how posts are formatted, who approves what and by when. The intern will return to it instead of asking the same question ten times.
Do not silently rewrite their texts. Leave a comment: what to cut, why, and how else to say it. This is slower in the first weeks and faster afterwards. Hold a short weekly meeting: what was done, where it was hard, what comes next. Newcomers often hesitate to ask, and the meeting removes that barrier.
A pre-publish checklist helps too: spelling, link, price, address, image size, call to action, tagged accounts.
Advice if you are the one looking for an internship
If you want an SMM internship in Uzbekistan, work just as systematically. Keep a personal file with lessons and corrections, ask questions right away rather than on deadline day, and learn to read statistics instead of judging only the visuals. With the owner's permission, collect your work into a portfolio: it counts for more than a certificate.
When to hand over more independence
The signs are simple: the intern prepares a week of material alone, edits concern details rather than meaning, and decisions are explained with account data rather than taste. Then you can give them one small content series or Stories from a script, while still checking before publication.
If you would rather have an experienced specialist run your company's Instagram while an intern learns alongside, the markdev team can take over the page and help set up a workable process. Tell us about your task and we will work out which format suits your business.
FAQ
What does an SMM intern do in the first weeks?
Collects references, maintains a statistics table, drafts captions and lists customer questions. Publishing on behalf of the company without review is too early.
Should an SMM intern be paid?
The terms are yours to set, but agree them upfront: hours per week, format, duration and what happens afterwards. Vague terms are a common reason strong candidates leave midway.
Can an intern get access to the company page?
Only through Meta Business Suite roles with the minimum permissions needed. Do not send passwords in chats, and close access on the final day.
Intern or agency: which is better?
An intern fits if you have a mentor and time to teach. If you need results without the internal workload, it is wiser to hand the page to specialists.
