Telegram ban bot: how to protect your business chat

A Telegram ban bot is a bot that watches a group, spots spam and blocks the accounts behind it. People in Uzbekistan usually search for it when a customer chat, a channel discussion or a course group fills up with junk. Sometimes the problem is the reverse: the bot itself has been blocked. Here is how to approach both as a business owner.

What a Telegram ban bot does for a business

Most companies in Tashkent and the regions run at least one Telegram chat: a residents' chat for a housing complex, a wholesale buyers' group, comments under a channel, a students' group for a course. With a few members, a moderator can handle everything by hand. With hundreds, spammers show up daily and a real customer's question gets buried under exchange-office ads and invitations to private channels.

A ban bot is an administrator bot that checks messages and new members on its own and blocks offenders according to your rules. It does not replace a human manager, but it removes the routine: people deal with disputed cases while obvious junk disappears automatically. It also protects your reputation, because a customer who sees casino ads in your chat draws conclusions about how the company is run.

How the bot bans: rights and limits

Technically it all runs on the Bot API. You add the bot to the group as an administrator and give it the right to ban members. Without that right it can see an offender but cannot act. A full block uses the banChatMember method, while a softer measure restricts permissions: the person stays in the chat but cannot post links, media or any messages for a while.

Some limits are worth knowing up front. A bot cannot ban the group owner or other administrators. Telegram applies rate limits to requests, so a mass cleanup of old members should be spread over time. Check the bot's privacy settings at launch as well, since they affect which messages it can see.

Which rules should trigger a ban

Write the rules before development, not after the first complaint. The set below usually covers most spam in customer chats.

A good practice is a ladder of penalties: delete the message, warn, restrict temporarily, and only then ban. Make the rules stricter for newcomers and softer for long-time members and customers with a purchase history.

  • Captcha on entry: press a button within a time limit or be removed
  • No links or @-mentions from users who just joined
  • A blacklist of words: casino, betting, “fast money”, dubious exchanges
  • Checks on forwards from unfamiliar channels
  • Blocking identical messages repeated in a row
  • Report-based action: several reports from members send a message to review

Common setup mistakes

The first mistake is false positives. A customer posts a card number for Click or a link to their Uzum order and gets banned for a “suspicious link”. You need a whitelist, awareness of your niche (the word “rate” is normal in a mortgage chat) and an unban button for admins.

The second is having no log. Every action should land in a private admin chat with the reason: who, why, under which rule. Without a log you have nothing to say to someone who insists they were banned unfairly.

The third is launching straight into hard bans. It is wiser to run for a week or two with deletions and warnings only, look at real triggers, and then switch blocking on.

When the bot itself gets blocked

This is a different situation. A user can block your bot, and any message sent to them will then fail, so that person should be removed from your mailing lists. If many users report the bot, Telegram may limit its activity. The causes are usually mundane: mailings without consent, identical messages sent in bursts, adding people to chats without asking, and requests sent too often.

Creating a new bot and reusing the old database will not fix it, because the problem moves along with the audience. Review your scenarios and, if needed, contact Telegram support.

  • Collect consent for messages when the user first starts the bot
  • Add a clear unsubscribe command
  • Do not write more often than customers expect
  • Handle the blocked-bot error and clean your database
  • Spread mass sends over time

Where to start

Define the task: moderating a customer chat, protecting channel discussion, anti-spam on entry, or all three. Put the rules into words, name a person who handles disputed cases, and launch the bot in warning-only mode first.

At markdev we build Telegram bots for businesses in Uzbekistan, from chat moderation to taking orders and payments through Click and Payme. If you want to talk through your own task, leave a request and we will work out which rules your chat actually needs.

FAQ

What does a Telegram ban bot do?

It automatically deletes spam in a group or chat and blocks offenders under rules you define. Disputed cases are left to a human administrator.

What permissions does a ban bot need?

It must be an administrator of the group with the right to ban members. Without it the bot can detect an offender but cannot remove them, and it can never ban the owner or other admins.

Can I restore someone the bot banned by mistake?

Yes. An administrator can lift the ban manually or through a bot command. That is why an action log and a clear unban option matter.

Why does Telegram limit a bot?

Most often because of spam complaints: mailings without consent, bursts of identical messages, adding people to chats without asking, or too many requests. Consent, an unsubscribe option and a sensible message frequency help.
