Why PHP is a reasonable choice for a bot
A Telegram bot is an ordinary web service. It receives requests from Telegram and sends replies through the Bot API. Any language that handles HTTP and JSON will do, and PHP is as capable as most, often more convenient for practical reasons.
First, a large share of company websites in Tashkent and the regions already run on PHP, so hosting or a server with PHP and MySQL is often in place. The bot can sit next to the site and read the same orders or product database. Second, PHP developers are easy to find, which makes handing over maintenance simpler. Third, if your site runs on Laravel, WordPress or Bitrix, the bot grows naturally out of code you already have.
Where PHP is awkward: projects that need a permanently running process with many simultaneous connections, or heavy real-time logic. For typical business tasks such as collecting leads, showing a catalogue, reporting order status or sending broadcasts, that is rarely a problem.
How the bot works: webhook instead of constant polling
There are two ways to receive messages. Long polling means your script keeps asking Telegram whether anything new has arrived. On ordinary PHP hosting this is awkward because it needs a process that never stops. A webhook works the other way: you give Telegram your script's address once, and it sends each event as a separate request. That suits PHP well, since the script starts, handles the event and exits.
A webhook needs an HTTPS address with a valid certificate. A typical cycle looks like this:
- Telegram sends an update to your address, either a message or a button press.
- The script checks the webhook secret token to reject requests that did not come from Telegram.
- It works out which step of the scenario the user is on, usually from a database record.
- It builds a reply and sends it with a Bot API method such as sendMessage.
- It returns a 200 response quickly and moves slow work into a queue.
Libraries and project structure
You can call the Bot API by hand with cURL, but for a working project a ready library is the safer route. In the PHP world, php-telegram-bot/core, Nutgram and telegram-bot-sdk are widely used, and Laravel has convenient wrapper packages. The choice depends on your framework and on how quickly the library follows new Bot API features.
Keep the structure simple: receiving updates, dialogue scenarios, and database or external-service work should live in separate places. Then changing a text or adding a step does not break everything else. Store the conversation state in the database, not in script memory, because PHP remembers nothing between two requests.
What to consider in the Uzbek market
Technically a bot in Tashkent and a bot in Samarkand work the same way, but the business requirements differ from many other markets.
- Two languages. Customers write in Russian and Uzbek, so offer a language choice in the first message and save it in the profile.
- Payments. People usually expect Click and Payme. Connect them through the payment systems' official interfaces and always confirm payment status on the server, not from a user's message.
- Leads for managers. The bot should pass each lead to a CRM or work chat with clear data: name, phone, what was chosen, and where the person came from.
- Audience habits. Many users arrive from Instagram, OLX or Uzum pages, so the bot should explain what it does fast and avoid long forms.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is building a bot that does everything. Pick one scenario that earns money, such as taking an order, booking a service or answering repeated questions, and add the rest after launch.
The second mistake is ignoring repeated deliveries. If your server answers slowly, Telegram may resend the same update and an order gets created twice. Store the update ID and skip ones you have already handled. The third is sending broadcasts without respecting Telegram's sending limits: messages get lost and some users block the bot. Send in batches through a queue and let people unsubscribe.
How to tell whether the bot pays off
Before launch, agree what counts as a result: completed requests, the share of users who reach the end of the scenario, repeat contacts. You can track the source with a parameter in the bot's start link, so you see which leads came from ads, which from the website and which from a Telegram channel.
Without this tagging a bot becomes a black box: messages arrive, but nobody knows where from or why. Connect bot data with your ads and CRM, and you can compare it honestly against other channels.
Where to start
Write the scenario on paper first: who messages the bot, what they want, and what should happen at the end. Then choose the technology. If you already have a PHP website, a bot on the same stack is a logical option; if not, pick the stack that fits the task.
The markdev team builds Telegram bots for businesses in Uzbekistan and connects them with advertising, CRM and payment systems. If you would like to discuss your task, get in touch and we will help define the scenario and a suitable stack.
FAQ
Can a Telegram bot run on ordinary PHP hosting?
Yes, as long as the hosting supports HTTPS and accepts external requests. The bot works through a webhook, so no permanently running process is needed. Broadcasts and heavy tasks will need a queue or a job scheduler.
Which is better for a bot: PHP, Python or Node.js?
For typical business tasks the difference is small. Choose the language your team knows and the one your website and database already use. That makes maintenance and handover easier.
How do I connect Click and Payme to a bot?
Through the official interfaces of those systems. Confirm payment on the server using the payment system's data rather than the customer's message, and keep the order status in your database.
How can I see where bot users come from?
Add a separate parameter to the bot's start link for each source, such as ads, website or channel. The bot saves it when the dialogue begins, so leads can be matched to your advertising.
