Why classic retargeting doesn't exist in Telegram
In Meta Ads, a pixel on your website remembers visitors, and the ad account later shows them ads on Instagram and Facebook. Telegram Ads is built differently. Placement is based on channels, topics and the interests of channel audiences, not on visits to your site. The platform leans heavily on privacy and does not use private conversations to target ads.
The ad platform keeps evolving, so check the current features on the official Telegram Ads website before you plan a campaign. Still, don't build a strategy on the hope that you can install a code snippet and chase those exact visitors through channels. The practical answer is a set of indirect but fully legitimate routes.
Four approaches that work
In every one of them the person takes the first step, and you simply return to them politely.
- A bot as your list of opted-in contacts. Pressing Start is permission to message. The bot can remind someone about an unfinished booking, send a quote, or announce news to those who agreed to receive it.
- A channel as a warm-up space. Invite site visitors and ad viewers to subscribe, then use every post, such as reviews, work examples and answers to common questions, as another touchpoint.
- Meta or Google retargeting that leads into Telegram. The pixel catches site visitors, and the ad button opens your bot or channel.
- Telegram Ads placed in channels your audience reads. This is not personal retargeting but a contextual reminder where your customers already spend time.
A working chain: an online store example
Imagine a clothing store in Tashkent running Instagram ads to its website. The site has a button, “Ask a question in Telegram,” which opens the bot with a start parameter that records the traffic source. People who viewed products but didn't write see an Instagram ad: “We'll help you pick a size and reply in Telegram.”
In the bot, the customer gets an answer from a manager and asks about stock, delivery to their region, and paying with Click or Payme. The bot then asks whether they'd like notifications about discounts in the category they care about. If there's no purchase, the bot sends a single useful message a few days later, for example a guide to choosing a size, not five reminders in a row.
Service businesses use the same logic: a clinic, a training center, a beauty salon. Instead of an abandoned cart you have an unfinished booking, and the bot gently brings the person back to it.
Connecting your website, ads and bot
The technical side rests on a few simple actions. Without them you won't know where a customer came from, and you can't message the right people.
- Put a bot button on your website and Instagram profile, with a different start parameter for each source.
- Make the bot's first message useful: a price list, a quote, a consultation.
- Store consent for future messages as a separate step.
- Segment contacts by interest, stage and source.
- Message only the segments for which the message makes sense.
- Create separate invite links for your channel for each traffic source.
The Meta Ads side: who to chase and where to send them
In Meta Ads Manager, build an audience of website visitors and exclude people who have already written to the bot. Otherwise you pay to show ads to people you are already talking to. Split visitors by depth of interest: someone who only saw the home page needs a different message from someone who reached the pricing page. The ad button should open the bot directly, not send people back to the website.
What not to do
The temptation to collect contacts quickly is strong, but the consequences are worse than they look: blocked accounts, complaints and violations of personal data requirements. A person who blocks your bot rarely comes back.
- Buying phone number databases and messaging people without consent
- Mass-adding people to groups and channels
- Using services that scrape members of other people's chats
- Sending the same promotional message to all bot subscribers every day
Measuring results and where to start
Don't stop at counting bot starts and channel subscribers. Count how many of them reached an inquiry or payment, and after how many touchpoints. Watch bot blocks and unsubscribes: when they rise, your messages are too frequent or not useful. Compare sources against each other and record results in a CRM, or at least a spreadsheet.
Start small: one bot with one clear benefit and one retargeting segment in Meta. Once the chain works, add segments and a channel. If you need help setting up Meta Ads and connecting your advertising to Telegram, the markdev team is happy to discuss your task and review your funnel with you.
FAQ
Can I install a Telegram pixel on my website?
There is no classic pixel that lets you show Telegram ads to your own site visitors. The ad platform changes over time, so check the current features on the official Telegram Ads website.
How do I retarget website visitors if Telegram doesn't allow it directly?
Use Meta or Google retargeting and point the ad button to your bot or channel. The reminder appears where the pixel works, and the conversation continues in Telegram.
Can I message a purchased list of phone numbers?
No. Messaging people without consent breaks Telegram's rules and personal data requirements, and leads to blocks and complaints. Work only with people who started your bot or subscribed to your channel themselves.
How do I know my bot writes too often?
Watch bot blocks and unsubscribes. If they rise after broadcasts, reduce frequency, segment your list and send each group only what is useful to it.
