Trade Marketing in Uzbekistan: Winning the Shelf and the Store

Trade marketing in Uzbekistan comes down to a simple test: when a customer walks into a shop, can they find your product, notice it and choose it? It covers everything between your warehouse and the shelf: distributors, retail chains, neighbourhood shops and bazaar stalls. If that chain is weak, even strong advertising leaks sales to whichever brand happens to be in stock.

What trade marketing actually covers

Brand advertising on Instagram or Telegram builds desire. Trade marketing makes sure that desire can turn into a purchase at the point of sale. The two depend on each other: a campaign sends people to the shop, and the shelf decides whether they leave with your product or the one beside it.

It matters most for producers and distributors of food, drinks, household chemicals, cosmetics and similar goods sold through intermediaries. Brands that sell through their own shop or online can borrow a good part of it too, because point-of-sale design, promotions and seller training follow the same logic.

Two audiences, two sets of tools

There are two groups to win over. The first is your trade partners: distributors, chain buyers, shop owners and sales assistants. The second is the shopper standing in front of the shelf. For partners, the usual tools are:

  • clear supply terms and volume bonuses;
  • seller training on what the product is and who to offer it to;
  • contests and incentives for sales staff;
  • marketing materials and support for the outlet;
  • better terms in return for better shelf positions.

What the shopper sees at the shelf

Shoppers often decide within seconds, so the job is to be visible and easy to understand. The toolkit includes shelf position and the number of facings, price tags, shelf talkers, wobblers and stands, promotions such as discounts, gifts or bundles, tastings and advice, and extra display spots like a stand at the till or a pallet in the aisle.

A promotion should not be asked to fix everything. A discount nobody notices is simply lost margin, and a price cut on a product hidden in a corner rarely turns it into a bestseller.

Shelf placement and merchandising

A product at eye level usually sells better than one on the bottom shelf, and a product placed next to the category leader borrows some of its attention. So position, width and neighbours are things to negotiate, not accidents of fate.

Agreeing on a layout is only half the work; keeping it is the other half. Merchandising means regular checks: is the product where it was agreed, are the price tags there, is there enough stock, has someone stacked a foreign box in front of it? A week after a visit, the shelf can look completely different.

The same thinking applies online. A product card on a marketplace such as Uzum or a listing on OLX is also a shelf, and photos, title, price and reviews decide who gets picked.

How Uzbekistan’s retail mix changes the playbook

A large share of retail here is small shops and bazaars rather than big chains. In those outlets, the relationship with the owner, regular visits from a sales rep and simple terms that can be explained in a minute do most of the work: what you bring, on what conditions, and what the shop gets out of it.

Chains are more formal. Expect listing bonuses, planograms, promo calendars and requirements on paperwork and delivery timing. A programme for bazaar traders and a programme for a chain are different products, and merging them into one usually satisfies neither.

Payment terms shape cooperation as well. Some outlets prepay, some want a deferral, some prefer a transfer through Click or Payme. It is better to turn these details into clear written rules than to renegotiate them on every visit.

Sales reps and measuring results

The sales rep is the main executor of trade marketing. A good one walks a defined route, checks the layout, photographs the shelf, takes orders and reports back. You do not need heavy software to start: a photo report from each visit and a basic spreadsheet already show where the product disappears. Later you can add a mobile app or a Telegram bot to log visits, photos and orders.

Without numbers, a trade budget quickly turns into discounts that bring no extra sales. A minimal set of metrics looks like this:

  • distribution: in what share of your target outlets the product is present;
  • share of shelf within the category;
  • sales in an outlet before and after a promotion;
  • promo payback: did the promotion bring in more than it cost;
  • visit regularity and the quality of rep reports.

Where to start

Pick one region and one type of outlet. Find out where your product is present and where it is not, and why: no contact, no order, unattractive terms or a poor spot. Then fix a shelf standard and partner terms, run a pilot promotion and compare sales before and after.

FAQ

What is trade marketing in simple terms?

It is the promotion of a product inside sales channels: with distributors, chains and shops. The goal is for the product to be in the right outlets, on a good spot, and chosen by shoppers.

How is trade marketing different from brand advertising?

Advertising creates interest and demand, while trade marketing makes sure the shopper can find the product in the store and pick it. Each works worse without the other.

Do I need trade marketing if I sell only through Instagram or a website?

Not in full, but some of it helps: well-built product cards, promotions, seller training and control over how resellers present your product.

How do I know a promotion worked?

Compare sales in the outlets before and after, and check whether the extra profit exceeded the cost of discounts and materials. Without that comparison, the conclusion is only a feeling.
