UTM Parameters: How to Tag Links and Track Leads in Uzbekistan

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link so your analytics tool knows which channel and campaign a visitor came from. Without them, an Instagram ad, a Telegram post and an SMS blast all collapse into one vague line in your report, and budget decisions turn into guesswork.

Why UTM parameters matter for a local business

Picture a shop in Tashkent that runs Meta ads, posts links in a Telegram channel, lists products on OLX and hands out flyers with a QR code. Leads arrive, yet nobody can say which of those channels earns its cost. The report shows many visits under different labels, or under none.

UTM tagging fixes that. You label every link yourself, and a tool such as Google Analytics keeps the label. From then on you compare channels by real inquiries and payments rather than by gut feeling.

The five parameters and what goes in them

A tag is a set of name=value pairs placed after a question mark and joined with an ampersand. There are five parameters, but the first three cover most everyday needs.

  • utm_source: the platform or origin, such as instagram, telegram, google, olx.
  • utm_medium: the type of placement, such as cpc for paid clicks, social, email, sms, qr.
  • utm_campaign: the promotion or campaign, such as navruz_sale or opening_yunusabad.
  • utm_content: what separates variants, such as video_1, red_banner or bio_link.
  • utm_term: the keyword, mostly relevant for search ads.

Example: one promotion, several links

Say a coffee shop launches a spring menu. The Instagram story link carries utm_source=instagram, utm_medium=social, utm_campaign=spring_menu and utm_content=story. The Telegram channel post uses source telegram with the same campaign. The QR code printed on cups uses qr as the medium.

Now one campaign splits into readable parts. You may find that stories bring many clicks, while the cup QR brings fewer visits but more orders, and that changes where the next sum goes.

Naming rules that keep your data clean

Analytics tools do not know that “Instagram”, “insta” and “ig” mean the same thing. To them these are three separate sources. Agree on the rules before the first campaign and write them down.

  • Lowercase Latin letters only, no spaces; use underscores between words.
  • One source, one spelling, across every link and every team member.
  • Short names that a colleague will still understand in six months.
  • Never put customers’ personal data into a tag.
  • Keep a shared sheet: date, placement, campaign, full URL and the person responsible.

Where to tag links and where not to

Tag everything you place yourself: ads, the link in your profile, posts and stories, Telegram and email newsletters, partner placements, and QR codes on packaging, signs and flyers. The last one is especially useful because offline media become measurable.

Do not tag internal links on your own website. If a visitor arrives from Instagram and then clicks a tagged link in your site menu, the original source is overwritten and the lead is credited to your own site. Also check how auto-tagging is set up in Google Ads and Meta so that manual tags do not clash with it.

Carrying the tag through to the lead and the sale

Clicks alone say little. What matters is that the tag survives until the inquiry. Store source, medium and campaign in hidden form fields and send them to your CRM along with the name and phone number. Then you can see which campaign led to a Click or Payme payment, not just a visit.

If orders come through a Telegram bot, pass the tag in the bot’s start link and save it with the conversation. The principle is the same: the source has to live until the deal.

Common mistakes

Five things break data most often: different spellings of one source, tags on internal links, some campaigns left untagged, names that are too long, and links that stop opening after parameters are added. The last one is easy to catch by opening every link on your phone before launch.

FAQ

How many UTM parameters are required?

In practice three are enough: source, medium and campaign. Add content and term when you need to compare ad variants or keywords.

Can I add UTM parameters to links inside my own website?

No. They overwrite the session’s original source, so your analytics loses track of where the visitor really came from.

How do I use UTM parameters with QR codes?

Create a tagged link for each medium, for example one for a flyer and another for a storefront sign, and turn each into a QR code. The report then shows which medium brought visitors.

Do I still need UTM tags if Google Ads and Meta show their own stats?

Yes. Ad accounts show clicks and spend, while tags let you follow behavior on your site and match the source to a lead in your CRM.
