What a web designer portfolio website actually needs to do
It is not an archive of every project you have ever touched. Its job is narrower: make your specialty obvious and push the visitor toward a first message. A profile on Behance or Instagram shows volume, while a portfolio website collects your best work on an address you own, one you can print on a paper card and put in your bio.
For a designer, the site is also a piece of work. A client judges the layout, typography and loading speed before opening the first case study. If the page is slow or breaks on a phone, strong examples will not rescue it.
The query has a second reading too: plenty of salon owners, studios and independent specialists in Tashkent simply need a tidy one-page site. The principles are the same, so this guide applies to both.
What to put on the page
A short structure that reads well on a phone in a couple of minutes works best:
- First screen: your name, specialty and who you work for in one line, such as “Websites for cafés and shops in Tashkent” rather than “creative designer”
- Services: landing pages, online stores, redesigns, interfaces — only what you truly do
- A few of your best projects, each with the task and the outcome
- How you work, from brief to launch, without padding
- Client feedback or logos, if you have permission
- Contact buttons: Telegram, phone, Instagram
- A price guide, or an explanation of what drives the cost
How to show work so people believe it
A screenshot in a nice frame proves nothing. Describe the client’s problem, what you changed, and how the result looks on a phone. If the outcome is measurable, use real figures from your own project, and only with the client’s consent.
If you have few projects, use study pieces or personal concepts and label them honestly as concepts. That is far better than someone else’s work under your name. The Tashkent market is small, and borrowed work tends to surface quickly.
Technical basics: speed, mobile and the Telegram link
Your link will most often be opened from Telegram or Instagram, on a smartphone, sometimes on a weak mobile connection. Small technical details therefore affect enquiries directly.
- Light images and restrained animation so the page opens quickly
- A responsive layout tested on real phones
- A clear Latin-letter domain and a secure connection
- A proper preview card when the link is sent in Telegram
- A contact form that sends you a Telegram notification
- A visit counter and goals for clicks on contact buttons
Paper cards, QR codes and social profiles
A paper card still helps at meetings, coworking spaces and events, but it has a short life. Add a QR code that leads to your site and a short address in text. Give the card’s link its own tag so analytics shows how many people really came from paper.
Use the same link in your Instagram bio and Telegram channel description. The client then has one entry point, and you get a clear picture of where enquiries come from. If you take prepayment, connect Click or Payme and say so on the page; it makes agreeing terms easier.
Common mistakes
Most portfolio sites lose clients for the same few reasons:
- Too many fonts, colours and effects, so the page looks like an experiment rather than a service
- Contacts buried at the bottom
- Projects with no description, so nobody knows what was yours and what was the client’s
- An unchanged template that visitors have seen many times
- No analytics, so nothing can be learned from traffic
- A page that has not been updated since your latest projects
Build it yourself or hire a team
For a designer, building the site personally is a sensible way to show your style. But if you lack time, or need layout, domain, hosting, Telegram notifications and analytics set up properly, handing it to a team lets you focus on content and clients.
At markdev we build turnkey websites in Uzbekistan, from structure and design to analytics setup. If you want to talk through your own portfolio site or another project, leave a request and we will look at the task and suggest a realistic format.
FAQ
What is a web designer portfolio website?
It is a short site or single page where a designer presents themselves, their services, best projects and contacts. Its goal is to get a first message from a potential client quickly.
Why is a website better than an Instagram profile alone?
A website has its own address, you control the structure and you can see analytics. Instagram complements it well but does not replace it as a main entry point.
How many projects should I show?
A handful of your strongest projects, each with the task and the result, is enough. Anything else can sit on a separate full portfolio page.
Does a designer still need a paper business card?
It helps at meetings and events when it leads to your site through a QR code. A card without a clear link brings almost nothing on its own.
