What a focus keyword in WordPress actually is
If your site runs Yoast SEO, Rank Math or a similar plugin, you will see the field below the editor of every post and page. You type a phrase, and the plugin checks your text against it, then shows red, orange or green results.
The key point is that this field is an internal tool for the plugin. It isn't a signal search engines read from your page. A green light only means you followed the plugin's rules; it doesn't predict rankings. Think of it as a checklist for the writer, nothing more.
What the plugin checks
After you enter a phrase, the plugin looks for it in the main places of the page and flags what is missing.
- SEO title and meta description
- the first paragraph
- the page URL
- H2 and H3 subheadings
- how often the phrase repeats relative to text length
- image alt text
- internal and outbound links
How to choose a focus keyphrase
Take the phrase from your keyword research and assign it to one page only: one page, one main intent. A page for a Tashkent air-conditioner installation service is better served by something like “air conditioner installation Tashkent” than by the single word “air conditioner”. Broad terms put you against stronger competitors, while your real customer usually searches with more precision.
Before you commit, open the search results and see what ranks: articles, catalogues or service pages. If a query only shows shops and marketplaces such as Uzum or OLX listings, an informational article will struggle there, so change the phrase or the page type. Also confirm that people actually search for your wording, using search suggestions or a keyword tool.
Which hints to follow and which to question
Some warnings are almost always worth fixing. Others deserve healthy scepticism, especially if your content is in Russian or Uzbek.
- No phrase in the title: fix it, this is among the most valuable changes.
- Empty meta description: write your own, or the search engine will pick a random snippet.
- No subheadings: long text without structure is hard to read.
- Images without alt text: add it, it helps users and search.
- Keyphrase density targets: skip forced repetition if the phrase sounds unnatural.
- Readability score: built mainly for English, so treat it as a rough guide.
Word forms and misleading red lights
Plugins often look for an exact match. Uzbek and Russian add endings and cases to words, so a perfectly natural headline may still leave the indicator red because the form differs from your focus phrase. Modern search engines understand word forms, so don't bend a sentence to satisfy the plugin.
The test is simple: would the text become better for a reader if I fixed this? If the answer is no, leave it.
Common mistakes
The most frequent one is using the same focus phrase on several pages. They start competing with each other and none gets a clear advantage. The second is rewriting a good text just to turn every dot green; readers notice awkward repetition immediately. The third is a perfect score on a page with an empty title and description, where the meta tags matter far more than density.
Another trap is treating the plugin as a real SEO audit. It won't tell you that a page loads slowly, doesn't answer the question or cannibalises another page. To judge results, use Google Search Console: impressions, clicks and the queries your page actually appears for.
A practical workflow
Write for the reader first and answer the question fully. Then enter the phrase and work through the important checks: title, meta description, URL, alt text and subheadings. Add a few links to related content and services, and keep the URL short and in Latin letters.

FAQ
Does Google see the Yoast focus keyword?
No. The field exists only so the plugin can check your text and give hints. Search engines evaluate the page itself: its title, content, structure and links.
What happens if I leave the focus keyword empty?
Your site keeps working and the page can still rank. You simply won't get the plugin's hints. You should still fill in the title and meta description.
Can I use the same focus keyword on several pages?
It's best not to. The pages will compete for the same query. Give each page its own main intent.
Do I need every indicator to be green?
No. Fix the important points and ignore advice that makes the text unnatural. Judge success by Search Console data, not by plugin colours.
