How remarketing works in Google Ads
Google remembers what a person did on your site, in your app or on your YouTube channel and places them into an audience. You then show ads to that audience in search, as banners on partner sites and apps, or in video. In the current interface these are called "Your data" segments, but practitioners still say remarketing.
It helps to be clear about its role. Remarketing does not bring in new customers on its own. It finishes the job for people who arrived through search, Instagram targeting, marketplace listings or word of mouth. That is why it should be judged as one part of the funnel, not as a stand-alone campaign.
What to prepare before launch
Without a technical foundation your audiences will simply stay empty. Check the following before you build anything.
If your site is built on a template builder and leads go to a Telegram bot, make sure the click into the bot is recorded as an event. Otherwise you cannot tell people who wrote to you from people who quietly closed the tab.
- The Google tag is on every page of the site, or Google Analytics 4 is linked
- Events are set up: form submit, phone call, Telegram click, payment via Click or Payme
- The site has a privacy policy that describes data collection
- You follow Google's rules on personalized advertising
- There is enough traffic: a segment needs a minimum size before it can serve, and Google sets that threshold
Which audience segments to create
The most common mistake is a single "all visitors" segment with one banner for everyone. Split people by intent, because the sharper the segment, the sharper the message. Someone who checked renovation prices and someone who opened the home page by accident need different conversations.
Set the membership window to match how fast your customers decide. Food delivery needs a short one; furniture, courses or renovation need a noticeably longer one. Pick actual values by looking at how quickly your own customers usually return and buy.
- Viewed a service or pricing page but sent no enquiry
- Added a product to the cart and did not pay
- Started a form and abandoned it
- Bought: exclude from chasing campaigns, or offer an add-on
- Viewed many pages, a sign of high engagement
- Watched your videos or subscribed to your YouTube channel
- A customer list from your CRM, if you have consent and your account meets Google's requirements
Where to show ads: Search, Display and YouTube
In Search campaigns you can add a segment in observation or targeting mode. With observation, ads run for everyone as before, but you see the segment's results separately and can raise or lower bids. With targeting, only the segment sees the ads. Starting with observation is safer because it does not shrink your reach.
On the Display Network, classic banner remarketing usually runs in targeting mode. Watch frequency closely: a single banner that follows someone for two weeks becomes irritating. On YouTube you can show short videos to people who visited the site or watched your channel.
In Performance Max, segments act as audience signals rather than hard limits. The algorithm treats them as a starting point and looks for similar people.
A teaching example: food delivery in Tashkent
Imagine a delivery service with a menu site and a YouTube channel about its kitchen. Segment one is people who opened the menu but did not order, with a short membership window. Segment two is people who have ordered at least once. Segment three is video viewers. In Search all three are added in observation mode, with a higher bid for the first and a lower one for recent customers. On Display the first group sees popular dishes and delivery time, the second sees new items, and on YouTube the third gets a short invitation to order.
This is a scheme to explain the logic, not a ready recipe. Windows and bids should be set from your own account data.
Common mistakes and restrictions
The same problems repeat from project to project. Also keep Google's policies in mind: in sensitive categories such as health or financial hardship, personalized advertising is restricted, so read the rules in advance.
- The tag is missing on some pages, so lists never fill
- Buyers are not excluded and money goes to people who already paid
- One broad segment instead of intent-based groups
- A membership window that is too long for quick purchases
- Identical banners for everyone, ignoring what the person viewed
- No frequency control on the Display Network
How to measure the result
Compare conversion rate and cost per conversion for remarketing segments against the rest of your traffic, using the audience reports in Google Ads. Keep in mind that remarketing often takes credit for other channels: someone arrives from Instagram, returns through a banner and buys. Judging by the last click alone is easy and often misleading.

FAQ
How is remarketing different from regular Google Ads?
Regular ads find new people by queries and interests. Remarketing shows ads to people who have already interacted with your website, app or YouTube channel.
Should I use observation or targeting in Search?
Most advertisers start with observation: reach stays intact while you see segment results and adjust bids. Targeting fits when you want ads shown only to that audience.
Do I need to exclude people who already bought?
In most cases yes, otherwise budget goes to people who have already paid. You can instead use a separate offer for an add-on product.
Why is my audience list not filling up?
Usually the tag is missing on some pages or is not linked to Google Analytics 4. A segment also needs to reach a minimum size, and Google sets that threshold.
