How the problem looks
In the identity section at ad level, you expect to pick your Instagram profile. Instead the list is empty, Ads Manager offers only your Facebook Page, or an account you used yesterday has vanished. Another sign is that Instagram placements are available, but the preview shows the Page name rather than your brand.
This is a permissions and connection problem, not an advertising one. Budget, creative and audience have nothing to do with it, so rebuilding the campaign only wastes time in review.
The chain everything depends on
Four conditions must hold for Instagram to appear: the account is professional, it belongs to your company's business portfolio, your ad account is allowed to use it, and your own profile has access to that asset. If one link is missing, the others cannot compensate.
So check in order, from the simple to the complex, instead of clicking everything at once. That shows you exactly what broke and avoids creating new problems.
Common causes
Start with the first three items. They are the most common and the quickest to verify.
- Personal profile. Ads require a business or creator account. Switching it in Instagram settings keeps your posts and followers.
- Account missing from the business portfolio. Add it in the portfolio settings by logging in to Instagram.
- No access for your profile. The account is in the portfolio, but you or the right colleague are not among the people assigned to it.
- Ad account not connected to this Instagram account. In some setups that permission has to be granted separately.
- Broken Page link. The Facebook Page was deleted, renamed or handed to someone else.
- Restrictions or a security check. After a suspicious login, Meta can temporarily hide some assets.
Instagram account not showing in Ads Manager after an agency exit
This is a classic for small businesses. A freelancer or studio once connected the account through their own ad account. The cooperation ended, but Instagram stayed attached to their portfolio. Until that old connection is removed, it will not appear in yours.
The fix: the account owner opens the Instagram app settings, goes to connected business tools and disconnects the other portfolio, or the former administrator removes the account on their side. If you need reports or audiences from the old account, export them first. Going forward, agree on partner access from day one: you keep the assets, and the contractor works within the rights you grant.
Step-by-step recovery
Work through these steps in order and check the list after each one.
- Confirm that Instagram is a professional account.
- Add the account to your company's business portfolio.
- Give access to yourself and to whoever will run the ads.
- Connect the right ad account to the Instagram account.
- If the Page changed, reconnect it to Instagram in its settings.
- Refresh Ads Manager or log in again and open a draft ad.
If nothing helps
Log out of every Facebook and Instagram session, clear the browser cache and try another browser. Sometimes adding the account from a different portfolio admin works. Changes do not always show up instantly, so allow a little time.
If the account still does not appear, collect screenshots of your portfolio settings and the identity section, list what you already checked, and contact Meta business support.
Before you launch, and how to avoid a repeat
Create a test ad and look at the preview in the feed and Stories: the avatar and name should be yours. If leads come through Direct, send a test message and make sure it reaches the right inbox. For a business that takes payments through Click or Payme and manages orders in Telegram, a lost enquiry costs far more than a minute of checking.
Keep Pages, Instagram accounts, ad accounts and pixels in the company portfolio rather than on an employee's personal profile. Add contractors as partners, and write down who the administrators are and how access is restored.

FAQ
Why does Ads Manager offer to run ads as my Facebook Page?
Usually the Instagram account failed one of the chain checks: it is personal, not in the portfolio, not linked to the ad account, or you lack access. Until that is fixed, only the Page identity is available.
Will I lose followers if I switch to a business account?
No. Posts and followers stay as they are. Only the account type and the available tools change.
Can I connect an Instagram account tied to an agency's portfolio?
Not directly. It must be disconnected first, either by the owner in Instagram settings or by the admin of that portfolio. After that, add it to your own.
I made the changes and the account still does not appear. What now?
Refresh, log in again, clear the cache and try another browser. If that fails, check the account for restrictions and contact business support with screenshots.
