Why one language version is not enough
In Tashkent, many business searches are still made in Russian, while in the regions, and on topics such as family, construction, farming or public services, Uzbek queries are noticeably more common. The exact split depends on your niche, so do not rely on general figures. Open your own search data and site analytics to see which language your visitors actually use.
For a clinic, a training centre, an Uzum shop or a delivery service, a second language version often opens an audience that competitors have not reached. That only works if both versions are built properly.
URL structure: subfolders or subdomains
Each language needs its own address. Most sites choose subfolders, for example domain.uz/ for Russian and domain.uz/uz/ for Uzbek. This setup is easier to maintain, and the authority of the domain supports both versions at once. Subdomains are possible, but they take more configuration and monitoring.
The most common mistake is switching the language with a script while the address stays the same. To a search engine that is a single page, and the second version effectively does not exist. Every page in every language must open from its own direct link.
Hreflang and the language switcher
The hreflang attribute links equivalent pages to each other. It helps a search engine understand that the Russian and Uzbek pages cover the same thing, show each user the suitable version and avoid treating them as duplicates. Tags should work in pairs: the Russian page points to the Uzbek one, and the Uzbek page points back.
The language switcher should be easy to spot and lead to the same page in the other language, not to the home page. Otherwise a visitor reading your price list lands on a generic page, gets lost and leaves.
Keyword research for each language
Collect keywords separately for each language. Uzbek queries are not a direct translation of Russian ones: services can be named differently, people use other words, and some questions are asked in only one language. Translating a Russian keyword list word for word produces phrases nobody types.
Also account for the alphabet. Most Uzbek searches are in Latin script, but Cyrillic appears too. The apostrophe in letters like o‘ and g‘ is typed in different ways: o‘, o' or o`. Check how people write in your niche and cover the main variants in copy, headings and snippets.
Adapt the text, do not just translate it
Machine translation without editing reads unnaturally. Readers notice quickly, and a search engine may judge such a page as low value. The Uzbek version should be written, or at least carefully edited, by a native speaker who knows the subject.
Good adaptation considers familiar phrasing, payment methods such as Click and Payme, contact channels such as Telegram and Instagram, and the terms customary in your industry. It goes beyond swapping words: often the order of arguments and the examples change too.
Technical details and order of work
Titles, descriptions, alt text and structured data should be in the language of the page. Include both language versions in your sitemap. If resources are limited, do not translate the entire site at once. Start with the home page, key commercial pages and contacts, and add the blog and secondary sections later.
- Choose a URL structure and stick to it.
- Research keywords separately for Russian and Uzbek.
- Translate and adapt the main commercial pages first.
- Set up hreflang in pairs and point the switcher to the same page.
- Write meta tags in the language of each page.
- Add both versions to the sitemap and check indexing.
Bottom line
A multilingual site is several complete versions linked to each other, not one page with a translate button. FAQ
Are subfolders or subdomains better for two languages?
For most businesses subfolders are simpler: an address like domain.uz/uz/ is easy to maintain and the domain authority is shared. Subdomains make sense if separate teams run each version or they sit on different platforms.
Is machine translation enough for the Uzbek version?
No. Unedited text looks unnatural, persuades customers less and may be judged as low value. A native speaker should review the result.
Do I need separate keyword research for Uzbek?
Yes. Uzbek queries are not exact translations of Russian ones: words, service names and questions differ. Also consider Latin and Cyrillic scripts and apostrophe variants.
What should I translate first?
The home page and key commercial pages: services, products, prices and contacts. Other sections can be added step by step.
