Organic Traffic: How to Measure It and Tell If It's Growing

Organic traffic is the set of visitors who reach your website through unpaid search results on Google, Yandex and other search engines. For a business in Uzbekistan it can become one of the most cost-efficient sources of customers over time, but only if you know exactly what you are counting and what you are comparing it with.

What counts as organic traffic

Say someone types "washing machine repair Tashkent" into Google, scans the results and clicks a site that has no "Ad" label. That visit is organic. If they click the labelled ad at the top, it is paid traffic. Visits from Instagram, Telegram channels, OLX or Uzum listings fall under social or referral sources, and people who type your address or open a bookmark are direct visitors.

Analytics tools separate these sources automatically, with one condition: links in ads, newsletters and posts need UTM tags. Without them, part of your messenger traffic ends up as "direct", and your channel picture gets distorted.

Where to see the numbers

Three tools are enough, and all of them are free to use. Their numbers will not match exactly: Search Console counts clicks in search results, while analytics counts visits on your site, and some people leave before the page loads or block tracking scripts. Pick one main source, check it every month and watch the direction of the trend rather than a single number.

  • Web analytics (Google Analytics, Yandex Metrica): the organic search channel, visitor behaviour, goals and leads.
  • Google Search Console: impressions, clicks, average position, queries and the pages that appear in Google.
  • Yandex Webmaster: the same data for Yandex search.

Brand and non-brand organic traffic

When someone searches for the name of your shop, clinic or salon, they already know you. That brand traffic grows with awareness: advertising, Instagram, word of mouth. It says little about how well your site is optimised.

Non-brand traffic comes from searches about a service or product without your name in them, such as "PVC windows price" or "dentist in Tashkent". This is the clearer signal of whether your site attracts new people. In Search Console, filter queries by your company name and track the two lines separately. Otherwise it is easy to mistake rising awareness for SEO success, or to miss a decline in non-brand demand.

How to tell if growth is real

Comparing this month to last month often misleads. Many niches are seasonal: construction, wedding services, education, holiday gifts, and demand also shifts during Ramadan. Add a few more views to your analysis.

  • The same period last year, to remove seasonality.
  • Page groups: services, catalogue, blog, and which individual pages are growing.
  • Query groups: commercial versus informational.
  • Leads next to traffic: did calls and enquiries rise along with visits?

Traffic is up but there are no enquiries

People who search "how to choose an air conditioner" leave enquiries less often than those who search "buy air conditioner in Tashkent". That is fine if your articles are meant to build trust and awareness. But if most visits land on pages unrelated to what you sell, the report looks good while the business gains little.

Check where your leads really come from: phone calls, forms, clicks to Telegram, payments through Click or Payme. Set up goals for those actions and look at conversion by page group instead of for the whole site.

What to check when organic traffic falls

Do not rush to rewrite pages. First rule out causes that have nothing to do with content, and go through the list in order.

  • A seasonal dip: compare with last year.
  • Technical changes: a new site version, changed URLs, pages blocked from indexing, server errors.
  • Indexing: confirm in Search Console that pages have not dropped out of the index.
  • Algorithm updates or changes in the results page, such as new blocks, maps or ads.
  • Competitors: someone may have strengthened their site and taken your positions.
  • The tracking code: make sure it did not disappear after edits to the site.

Where to start

Build a simple baseline report: organic visits by month, brand and non-brand queries shown separately, and leads by page. After a couple of months you will have a clear reference point.

FAQ

How is organic traffic different from paid traffic?

Organic visitors come from regular search results and you do not pay per click. Paid traffic comes from ads and stops when you pause the campaign.

How long does SEO take to grow organic traffic?

It depends on your niche, the condition of the site and competition, so there is no honest universal figure. Judge progress month by month and against the same period last year.

Why do Search Console and analytics show different numbers?

They count different events: clicks in search results versus visits on your site. Some difference is normal. What matters is the trend within the same source.

Is growing traffic enough to call SEO a success?

No. Look at leads, calls and sales alongside traffic, and keep brand and non-brand queries separate.
