Why tracking positions matters
A site can sit still for months or slowly slip, and the owner often finds out only when enquiries dry up. By then the cause is harder to trace: a lot of time has passed and many edits have piled up. Regular tracking shows a change as it happens, so you can link it to a specific action such as a new page, a hosting move or rewritten titles.
A ranking is an intermediate metric. Leads, phone calls and Telegram messages matter more, so always read positions next to traffic and enquiries. If you climb the results but get no extra leads, the issue is probably the offer, the price or the page itself, not SEO.
Manual checks and their limits
The simplest method is to open search in incognito mode and look for your site. That is fine for a one-off look, for example to confirm your company shows up for its own name.
It does not work for monitoring. Incognito does not remove personalisation entirely, results depend on where you are, and phone and desktop can differ. Checking dozens of queries by hand takes ages, and comparing with last month is nearly impossible if you did not record anything.
Free data: Search Console and Yandex Webmaster
Google Search Console and Yandex Webmaster report real impressions, clicks and average position for the queries where people saw your site. This comes straight from the search engines, so connect both first. They cost nothing.
They have quirks: position is an average, and data arrives with a delay. They are excellent for answering which queries bring people in and whether visibility is growing, less so for checking an exact spot today.
Rank tracking services
Dedicated tracking services check results for your query list on a schedule, for a chosen location and device, keep the history and chart the trend. You can add competitors and compare visibility. Pricing usually depends on the number of queries, how often they are checked and which search engines are covered, so keep the list compact.
Settings that fit Uzbekistan
The same query can look different under different settings. Set the parameters once and avoid changing them without a reason, otherwise the trend loses its meaning.
- Location: Tashkent, another city or the whole country, wherever your customers live
- Device: mobile and desktop separately, since many people search from a phone
- Search engine: Google, plus Yandex if your audience uses it
- Language: track Russian and Uzbek queries as separate groups
- Groups: services, districts and cities, brand
- Only important queries: commercial ones, a few per key page
How often to check and how to read the report
Weekly is enough for most sites. Daily checks make sense during active changes or in a very competitive niche. Day-to-day wobbles are normal and are not a basis for conclusions.
A useful report shows the share of queries in the top 3, top 10 and top 30 by group, plus weekly change. It is easier to digest than a list of hundreds of numbers. Look at groups instead of single queries, and at the monthly trend instead of weekly noise. If a group is rising, the work in that direction pays off. If it is flat, you probably need new pages or improvements to existing ones.
What to do when rankings drop
If one or two queries slip, it is usually normal fluctuation or a competitor getting stronger. If many queries fall at once, treat it as a signal: check that the site is reachable, indexing settings, recent edits and any messages in Search Console. Do not wait, because the sooner you find the cause, the cheaper the fix.

FAQ
How often should I check my rankings?
Once a week is enough for most sites. Daily checks help during big site changes or in a very competitive niche.
Are the free Google and Yandex tools enough?
They show which queries bring visitors. Positions there are averaged and delayed, so for precise monitoring and competitor comparison you usually need a separate tracker.
Why do my results differ from my customer's?
Results depend on location, device, search history and search engine. Tracking fixes the city, device and engine so numbers stay comparable.
What matters more, rankings or leads?
Leads. Rankings are a tool that helps explain why traffic and enquiries rise or fall.
