What a portfolio site is and who needs one
People usually mean one of three things: a personal site for a designer, photographer, videographer or architect; a studio or agency site; or a works section inside an ordinary company site, such as a renovation crew, a furniture workshop or an event agency. The job is the same in every case: remove the doubt of whether you can handle the client's task.
In Uzbekistan a prospect often meets you first on Instagram or Telegram and opens the website to double-check. So the site should feel like confirmation rather than another feed: more context than social media gives, and a clear next step.
Start with the goal and the visitor
Answer two questions first: who lands on the site, and what should they do next. A client in Tashkent choosing a contractor for an office fit-out wants different things from an overseas client hiring an illustrator. The first cares about timelines, estimates and finished sites; the second about style and working terms.
Everything follows from that: the first screen, the order of blocks, the tone of the copy. Write the goal in measurable terms, such as form requests, Telegram messages or calls. Without it, arguments about button colour become arguments about taste.
Pages you actually need
A minimal set that covers most small and mid-sized projects:
- Home: one sentence on what you do, a few of your best projects and a contact button
- Work page with filters by type of task or industry
- Project page: the brief, the solution, the result, the stages
- About the specialist or team: faces, experience, way of working
- Services and process: how the work goes and what the price depends on
- Contacts: Telegram, phone, map, form
How to present projects in portfolio website design
The main rule is fewer, but stronger. Ten selected projects beat fifty random ones. Pick work that resembles the orders you want to win, not everything you have ever done.
Treat every project as a short story: the original problem, your solution, the outcome. If you have real numbers, show them; if not, do not invent any. A client quote or a before-and-after photo does the job. Publish brand names and client names only with their consent.
Visually, what matters is good, consistently edited images and one grid. Embed video with a preview image so it does not slow the page down.
Speed and the mobile version
Most visitors open sites on a smartphone, and outside the capital the connection can be unstable. A portfolio is heavy by nature, so image optimisation belongs to design, not to technical details: modern formats, lazy loading, sensible file sizes.
Test on a real phone. Is the text readable without zooming? Can a thumb reach the button? Does the page jump while loading? A “Message on Telegram” button often beats a long form, because clients are used to talking there. Online payment through Click or Payme is usually secondary for a portfolio; a fast way to get in touch matters more.
Common mistakes
These most often spoil the impression of a portfolio:
- A home page with a single slider and no explanation of what you do
- Projects without captions or context
- Contacts buried in the footer
- One language only, while the audience reads both Russian and Uzbek
- No analytics, so you cannot tell which projects bring enquiries
How to approach the order
Before the start, collect your materials: selected projects, quality photos, text about yourself, examples of sites you like. Agree in advance who writes the copy, who shoots the photos, which platform the site runs on and who will keep it updated. The price depends on the number of pages, how unique the design is, how many language versions you need, integrations and content preparation.

FAQ
How many projects should a portfolio show?
Enough to show the range of tasks without repetition. A few strong cases on the home page are usually enough, and the rest can live on a separate page.
Do I need a website if I have Instagram?
Instagram shows style well but explains process, terms and results poorly. A website puts all of that in one place, can be found through search and is easy to send to a client as a link.
Should I use a site builder or custom development?
A builder is fine for a simple business card site at the start. If unique design, speed, SEO and analytics matter, custom development is the better choice.
Which languages should the site have?
Follow your audience. For most businesses in Uzbekistan, Russian and Uzbek together make sense, and English is added when you work with foreign clients.
