Two customers in one deal
In most cases the parent chooses and pays, while the child does the learning. If the student enjoys the lessons but the parent sees no change in grades, the lessons quietly fade out. If the parent is happy with the numbers but the child is bored, homework stops and the results disappear anyway. Your funnel has to work for both of them.
There is also a third party: the school or the exam that will judge the outcome. That is why a conversation with a family works best when it is built around a specific goal and deadline rather than a vague promise to improve knowledge.
Where enquiries come from
For a tutor in Tashkent or the regions the sources are usually the same, and referrals come first. Everything you do for current students also works as marketing for the next ones.
- Word of mouth from other parents, classmates or school teachers
- Parent chats in Telegram: class, school and neighbourhood groups
- Listings on OLX and social networks
- A Telegram channel or Instagram page with breakdowns of exam tasks and common mistakes
- Searches like "subject + district" or "subject + online"
A sales funnel for tutors, step by step
Seven steps are enough to keep track of everyone. Keep a simple spreadsheet or note and mark which step each student is on.
- Enquiry: a Telegram or Instagram message, or a phone call
- First conversation: goal, level, deadline, format
- Trial lesson with a short diagnostic
- Feedback after the trial and agreements
- Regular lessons
- Progress updates and reports to the parent
- Goal reached: continuation or referral
The first conversation and the trial lesson
In the first conversation, do not sell; ask. Why does the student need lessons: grades, an exam, university entry, one difficult topic? What is hard right now? When is the result needed? Online or in person, and on which days? Then explain briefly how you work: what a lesson looks like, how you set homework, how you track progress. Finish by offering a trial lesson.
Speed matters. A parent may well message several tutors at once, and the one who replies the same day with clear answers often gets the trial lesson first.
A trial lesson does two jobs: you assess the level, and the family assesses you. Prepare a short diagnostic, a clear explanation of one topic and a task the student can solve alone. They should leave feeling "I can do this". Afterwards, send the parent a Telegram message with strengths, gaps and a rough plan.
Agreements and reports that keep students
Agree on the following in advance and send it in writing: how often and when you meet, how payment works (per lesson, per month or as a package), the rules for rescheduling and cancelling, and what you expect from the student. One message covering these points prevents arguments that otherwise surface at the worst moment, such as the week before an exam. Monthly or package payment tends to make attendance steadier, while paying per lesson can lead to more cancellations.
A parent does not sit in on lessons and judges by grades and by what you tell them. A short note after each lesson or once a week, covering what you studied, how it went and what was assigned, shows your work. If a student skips homework, say so calmly and early, not on payment day. Small monthly goals and a comparison with the first diagnostic also help.
Where tutors lose students
Tutors tend to lose families in the same few places:
- The first message gets a reply days later
- The trial lesson runs without a diagnostic or a summary
- There is no agreement on payment and rescheduling
- The only contact with the parent is a payment reminder
- The student is bored and the tutor does not notice
Referrals as part of the funnel
Four numbers are enough to track: how many enquiries reach a trial lesson, how many trials turn into regular lessons, how many months a student stays on average, and how many new families arrive through referrals. An ordinary spreadsheet is all you need.
When the goal is reached, whether the exam is passed or grades have improved, review the result with the parent and propose a next step: a new goal, maintenance lessons or another subject. If the family is happy, ask them to recommend you to friends. Good feedback travels fast through parent chats, especially before exams. With the family's permission, collect results and stories you can use in your channel.
If you teach several subjects, run a small learning centre or want a funnel that covers several channels, markdev can help build a marketing strategy for your niche and measure it clearly. Get in touch and we will talk through your task.
FAQ
Where should a tutor start when building a sales funnel?
Write down the steps from the first message to the referral and track each family on a simple sheet. Then fix the weakest points first: the speed of the first reply, the trial lesson and the agreements.
Does a tutor need a website, or are Telegram and Instagram enough?
Telegram and Instagram are often enough to start, since they make it easy to talk to parents and show your value. A website becomes useful when you add subjects, grow, or want to be found through search.
Should a trial lesson be free?
There is no fixed rule, so it is your call. What matters is that the lesson includes a diagnostic and a summary for the parent, so it works as a funnel step rather than an ordinary class.
How can a tutor get more referrals from parents?
Show progress with regular reports and ask for a recommendation when results are visible, for example after an exam or improved grades. Telegram parent chats spread such feedback quickly.
