Why mark up services when there is no special snippet
Say you run an air-conditioner repair business in Tashkent. Your page "AC cleaning" is written for people, but a search engine sees a block of words. Markup turns those words into facts: this is the service, this is the company providing it, this is the area you cover.
Do not expect higher rankings or star ratings from it. The benefit is clarity. Search engines and AI answer tools are less likely to confuse what you do and where you take clients. Rankings still depend on the page itself: a clear description, terms, examples of work, answers to common questions and an easy way to reach you by phone or Telegram.
The Service type and its properties
Schema.org has a dedicated Service type. These are the properties you will use most:
- name — the service name, matching the page
- serviceType — the kind of service, such as home appliance repair
- description — a short, factual summary without slogans
- provider — the company or person delivering the service
- areaServed — the city, districts or region you actually serve
- offers — terms and price, only if they are visible on the page
Connecting services to your business
The real strength of Service is the provider property. It points to the description of your organisation, so a service page is no longer an isolated document. On the contacts page, mark up the company itself: name, address, phone, opening hours and links to Instagram and Telegram profiles.
If you work from a physical location, such as a clinic, car workshop or beauty salon, pick the most specific LocalBusiness subtype available instead of the generic one. A dental clinic fits Dentist, a workshop fits AutoRepair, an accounting firm fits AccountingService. For multi-branch companies, each branch needs its own page and its own markup with its own address.
Catalogues and more precise types
A small site with a handful of services can list them in the company markup through hasOfferCatalog. On larger sites, separate markup on each service page is clearer.
You can also add BreadcrumbList to show where the service sits in the site structure, and FAQPage if the questions and answers are genuinely visible to visitors. For courses, medical procedures and dated events, Schema.org offers Course, MedicalProcedure and Event. Google's requirements for these change over time, so check the current documentation rather than old guides.
Common mistakes to avoid
Most problems appear when markup is applied as a template without looking at the page:
- listing districts or conditions that the page text never mentions
- identical markup on every service page, with only the name changed
- nesting the company rating and self-written reviews inside each service
- leaving an old company name or phone number in provider
- using Product on a service to chase stars, which breaks search guidelines
- a price in the markup that differs from the price on the page
How to test it and where to start
The Schema Markup Validator shows which types and properties were recognised. Google's Rich Results Test may report that no rich results were detected for Service. That is normal, because Google has no dedicated display for ordinary services. What matters is that every value in the markup can be found on the page by a human reader.
Start with the company and your two or three main services, then adapt the template for the rest. If you want a second pair of eyes, markdev works on SEO optimisation in Uzbekistan and can review your service pages. Tell us what you are trying to achieve and we will suggest what to mark up first.
FAQ
Does service schema markup improve rankings?
Not by itself. It helps search engines understand the page more precisely, but rankings depend on content quality, usefulness and how easy the page is to use.
Which type should a service page use?
Usually Service with provider and areaServed filled in. For clinics, courses or events, more specific types such as MedicalProcedure, Course or Event fit better.
Why does the Rich Results Test show nothing for Service?
Google has no separate rich result for ordinary services. If the Schema Markup Validator reports no errors, the markup is fine.
Can I add reviews and ratings to a service?
Only if they are visible on the page and not written by you about yourself. A company rating nested inside every service is treated as a mistake.
