What a Telegram scam bot is
A scam bot is a bot or account that pulls someone into a conversation in order to get money, card details, an SMS code, or access to another person's account. Telegram makes this easy because anyone can create a bot, and dressing it up as a real company takes minutes: a name, a logo, product photos copied from somewhere else.
For a fraudster, a bot is a production line. It never gets tired, replies instantly, and looks the same to hundreds of people. That is why the topic matters not only to cautious users but to every company whose name can be faked.
How fraudsters use your business name
The common schemes in Uzbekistan look ordinary. A person sees a listing on Instagram or OLX, moves to Telegram, and ends up talking to a "manager" of a shop. The manager asks for a prepayment to a personal card "to reserve the item" and then disappears. Another version: a bot posing as a well-known brand announces a giveaway and asks the winner to pay for "prize delivery" through Click or Payme.
A harsher scheme also exists. A fake "support team" offers to refund a failed purchase and asks for the SMS code. The customer loses money and blames the shop whose name was used.
Signs of a scam bot
A fake can be spotted if you know a handful of repeating traits. It helps to share them with both staff and customers.
- It asks for prepayment to a private person's card instead of payment through the company's official payment service.
- It demands an SMS code, full card details, or a password, which a genuine service never asks for.
- It pushes urgency: "two spots left", "the offer ends in an hour".
- The link leads to a site with a similar but slightly altered address.
- The account name differs from the real one by a single letter or an underscore.
- It promises unusually good terms or a prize you never entered for.
- The real company's website and social pages do not list this account as official.
What your business risks even if you did nothing wrong
A customer who has been cheated rarely works out who exactly did it. They write in your comments, leave a review, tell friends: "I bought from them and the money vanished." A reputation built over years takes damage from someone else's fake account.
The second problem is lost demand. Some people who wanted to buy from you land with fraudsters instead, and others, after one bad experience, will not come back to you or to any other Telegram seller.
How to protect your customers
You cannot ban fakes entirely, but you can make the real channel obvious and easy to verify. Start with simple steps.
- Publish one list of official accounts and bots on your website, Instagram, and Telegram profile.
- State how you accept payment and what you never ask for: SMS codes and passwords.
- Pin this message in your channel and in your Instagram bio.
- Watch for mentions of your brand and report fake accounts to Telegram quickly.
- Brief your managers on what to say to a customer who has already met a fake.
What an official company bot gives you
A genuine bot works for you in several ways. It becomes the single clear entrance: ordering, delivery status, warranty questions. Customers get used to the idea that communication happens there, not in random private messages.
The bot can accept payment through connected payment services, report order status, and pass complicated questions to a human operator. When everything happens in one place, any request to send money "to the manager's card" immediately looks suspicious.
One more point: a bot does not replace vigilance. It lowers the risk but does not cancel the need to explain things to your customers.
Where to start
First, look at your business through a fraudster's eyes: which channels are open, where a customer could confuse the official account with a fake, and what your ads promise at the moment. Then decide which actions a customer should only ever take in a verified place.
If the task is to build that kind of protected channel, a bot for orders, payment, and support, the markdev team can discuss it with you and propose a scenario that fits your business in Tashkent or in the regions. Write to us, and we will work out how to set up customer communication so that it is hard to fake.
FAQ
How can I tell that a Telegram bot is a scam?
Be wary if it asks for prepayment to a personal card, an SMS code, or full card details, rushes you, or sends a link to a site with a similar but altered address. Check the account against the company's official website and social pages.
What should I do if a fake bot writes in my company's name?
Save screenshots and account links, report the account to Telegram, warn your customers in your own channels, and list which accounts are genuine. Do not reply to the fraudsters on behalf of the company.
Can an official bot stop scammers completely?
No. It does not prevent fakes from appearing, but it makes the real channel clear and verifiable. Customers find it easier to notice that a request to send money outside the bot breaks your company's rules.
Do you build scam bots?
No. markdev develops Telegram bots for legitimate businesses: order intake, leads, notifications, and customer support.
