What “Telegram SMS bot” actually means
The phrase covers three quite different things. Mixing them up leads companies to order the wrong solution or to end up on questionable services.
The first two are useful for business. The third almost always creates risk and has nothing to do with marketing.
- A bot that replaces or complements SMS: notifications, reminders and order statuses arrive in the customer’s Telegram.
- A bot that sends regular SMS on a command or from your CRM through a connected SMS provider.
- Bots that hand out “disposable numbers” for receiving other people’s codes. This is a grey area: such services break platform rules, and company processes should never depend on them.
How a bot message differs from an SMS
The key limitation is that a bot cannot be the first to message someone who has never started it. The customer has to press “Start”, for example through a link on your website, in Instagram, on a QR code in the shop or on a receipt. After that you have a direct channel where a message can do more than an SMS: buttons, a Click or Payme payment link, a photo, a choice of action.
SMS works on any phone and needs no opt-in. A Telegram bot requires the customer to have the messenger and to agree to the conversation. So the useful question is not “which is better” but “which channel fits which message”.
Tasks where a bot beats SMS
A bot wins whenever the customer has to do something or reply after reading. Typical examples in Tashkent and the regions:
- order status: accepted, packed, handed to the courier;
- appointment reminders for a clinic, salon or driving school with “confirm” and “reschedule” buttons;
- a payment link and a receipt after the payment;
- confirming a request from your website or an Instagram ad and alerting a manager at the same moment;
- service messages: opening hours, new stock, a reminder to reorder.
When you still need SMS
Some cases are too early to give up on SMS: customers without Telegram, first contacts who have not started the bot yet, and messages that must reach any phone. A workable setup is the bot as the main channel and SMS as a fallback when the customer has not subscribed or has not opened the message.
For the fallback you connect a licensed SMS provider and the bot calls it through an API. For login codes Telegram also has its own verification-code service, but its terms and availability for Uzbekistan should be checked at launch time rather than assumed.
What to avoid
Do not buy phone number databases and do not message people who never agreed to hear from you. Telegram limits mass messaging, spam complaints damage trust in the account and can get a bot blocked. Collecting numbers and names also falls under personal data requirements, so customer consent should be recorded.
One more warning: do not use bots that resell virtual numbers to register business accounts. If you lose access to the number, you lose the company account with it.
What drives the cost and how to tell if the bot pays off
The price depends on the number of scenarios, integrations (CRM, cash register, Click, Payme, website), a manager panel, hosting and support. If an SMS fallback is connected, the provider’s per-message tariff is added on top. Plan for it from the start, not after launch.
To judge results, agree on metrics in advance: how many customers started the bot, what share of messages were delivered and read, and how cost per lead and repeat orders changed. Without basic analytics you cannot say whether the bot pays off or simply runs.
Where to start
List the messages you send customers today and mark those that need a reply or an action. Those are the first to move into a bot. Then decide where customers will start the bot and whether you need an SMS fallback.
At markdev we build Telegram bots for businesses in Uzbekistan, including integrations with payments, CRM and SMS providers. If you want to talk through your task, leave a request and we will suggest a setup that fits your business.
FAQ
Can a Telegram bot send SMS?
Yes, but not directly. The bot receives a command or a CRM event and passes the SMS text to a provider through an API, and the provider delivers it to the phone number.
Can a bot message a customer by phone number on its own?
No. The user must start the bot first. That is why the bot link is placed on a website, in Instagram, on a receipt or a QR code.
Will a bot fully replace SMS?
For most service messages it works well, but customers without Telegram need a fallback. A common setup is the bot as the main channel and SMS as the backup.
Are virtual number bots for receiving codes safe?
They are a poor foundation for a business. These services break platform rules, numbers can be taken back, and you risk losing access to company accounts.
