Website Logo: How to Design and Use It on Your Site

A website logo is more than a picture in the top corner. When a customer taps your link in Instagram or Telegram, they decide within seconds whether you look like a serious company, and the logo is one of the first signals they see. Getting it right means preparing it properly and using it consistently everywhere your link shows up.

What people mean by a website logo

The phrase covers several different needs, and your plan depends on which one is yours. It has no direct link to advertising, but it does affect trust, and trust affects whether a visitor turns into an enquiry.

  • Examples and galleries: browsing logos of other sites to find a direction for your own.
  • A logo for a new site: creating a mark or adapting an existing one for the web.
  • Technical pieces: the favicon, the link preview image, a version for dark backgrounds.
  • A logo for an online-only project, such as a store or marketplace seller with no offline brand yet.

Where a logo appears on and around your site

Most people picture only the header. In practice the mark turns up in several places, each with its own requirements.

  • Header and footer: the main version, linking back to the home page.
  • Browser tab and bookmarks: the favicon, a small square symbol.
  • Link previews in Telegram, WhatsApp and Instagram: the image and title that load when you send your address to a customer.
  • Search results: some sites show a small icon next to the address.
  • Emails, invoices and payment pages for Click or Payme, wherever your own mark can be added.

File formats and technical basics

The core rule is one vector source plus a few raster versions. A vector file (SVG) stays sharp on any screen and is usually light, which helps the page load quickly. Where vector is not accepted, you prepare a PNG with a transparent background.

The favicon should be drawn separately rather than simply shrinking the main logo. A wide mark with a long company name turns into a smudge in a tiny square. Designers usually pick a symbol, a monogram or a single letter. If your site has light and dark modes, you need two logo versions, otherwise a black mark disappears on a dark background.

The link preview needs its own image as well. Without one, a messenger may pick a random picture from the page or show nothing, and your link looks careless in the chat.

Common website logo mistakes

The most frequent story on our market is a logo copied from an Instagram avatar or a screenshot. The result is blurry, with rough edges. The second mistake is thin lines and small lettering that cannot be read on a phone, even though most visitors arrive from a phone.

A few smaller things also hurt the impression: a heavy file of several megabytes, an empty alt text, a logo that does not link to the home page, and different versions of the mark on the site, on Instagram and on business cards. Customers should not have to wonder whether it is the same company.

The right order: brand first, site second

If you do not have a logo yet, it makes sense to define the visual identity first: the mark, colours and fonts. The site designer can then plan the header and buttons around real elements instead of redoing everything later. If you already have a logo, it should be reviewed: are there enough versions, is it readable at small size, are there any licence questions about fonts or images.

The cost depends on whether the mark is drawn from scratch or adapted, how many variants you need, and whether brand materials are updated too. Ask your contractor which files you will receive at the end: source files, not just a picture.

How to check that everything works

Send your site link to yourself in Telegram and look at the preview. Open the site on a phone and in dark mode. Bookmark the page and check the icon. If anything looks blurry or empty, go back to your contractor.

At markdev we build websites on a turnkey basis, and the logo, favicon and link preview are part of what we check before launch. If you want to discuss your site or refresh how it looks, leave a request and we will go through the task without inflated promises.

FAQ

Do I need a favicon if my site already has a logo?

Yes. A favicon is a compact, separate version of your mark for browser tabs and bookmarks. The main horizontal logo is usually unreadable at that size.

Which file format is best for a website logo?

SVG as the vector master, plus PNG with a transparent background where vector is not supported. Always ask the designer for the source files too.

Can I take the logo from my Instagram profile?

It is better not to. The avatar is cropped and compressed, so it will look blurry on a website. Ask for the original files.

Why does my link in Telegram show no image?

Most likely the page has no preview image set. It is added in the site markup, after which the messenger pulls the picture and title automatically.
