WordPress Meta Tags: How to Set Title and Description

WordPress meta tags are the title, description and a few supporting tags that decide how a page looks in Google and how a link opens in Telegram. WordPress handles them only at a basic level out of the box, so it pays to set them up properly once instead of leaving it to chance.

What WordPress does on its own

WordPress builds the page title automatically, usually from the post name and the site name. It does not create a meta description at all by default. In that case the search engine picks a snippet from the page text, and an online shop in Tashkent can end up showing a piece of its menu or return policy instead of a product description.

That is why most sites use an SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math. It adds fields to every page, templates for bulk settings and Open Graph output. The plugin does not lift rankings by itself; it gives you control over what people see in the results.

Where to edit WordPress meta tags

Once the plugin is active, every page and post editor gets an SEO block: a title field, a description field, the page address and a snippet preview. For categories and tags, the same fields sit on the category edit screen.

Work on two levels. Templates for each content type (posts, categories, products) make sure no field stays empty. Then write the home page, service pages and main categories by hand. A template produces something like “Services – Site Name”, and nobody clicks on that.

Treat the plugin’s colored scores as hints. There is no reason to damage good copy for a green light.

How to write a title

The title is the headline of your search result. For a service page it could be “Washing machine repair at home in Tashkent | Company name”. It tells the reader what you do, where and who you are.

  • Put the main query near the beginning.
  • Make every page’s title unique.
  • Add the company name at the end if there is room.
  • Do not list queries separated by commas; a person reads this.
  • Use the plugin preview so the ending is not cut off.

How to write a meta description

A description is one or two sentences about what the visitor will find. Specifics beat generic claims: delivery districts, payment through Click or Payme, how soon a technician can come, what exactly the article covers.

Google sometimes replaces your description with a text fragment that matches the query, and that is normal. A well-written one still often stays in the snippet and helps earn the click. Skip the keywords meta tag: it does not affect rankings.

Open Graph and link previews in Telegram

SEO plugins also output Open Graph tags: an image, a title and a description for previews. This is what a customer sees when you send a link in a Telegram chat or when someone shares it. If an important page has no image of a suitable size, the messenger may pick a random picture or show the link with no preview.

Set an image for the home page, your services and your most-read articles, then send the link to yourself in Telegram to check the result.

Duplicates and theme conflicts

Some themes print meta tags themselves. Together with an SEO plugin you can get two titles or two descriptions in the page code. Open the page source and look in the head section: each tag should appear once. If there is a duplicate, switch off the theme’s output or ask a developer.

To check the whole site, go step by step:

  • Crawl the site with a crawler tool.
  • Find pages sharing the same title and description.
  • Look at blog pagination and archives separately.
  • Fix the important pages by hand.

noindex, two languages and switching plugins

With a plugin you can keep a page out of the index using the robots tag with noindex. It suits thank-you pages, service pages and thin archives. This is not the same as robots.txt: the tag controls indexing of one page, while the file controls the crawler’s access to URLs.

If your site runs in Russian and Uzbek, meta tags are set separately for each version. Check that Uzbek pages carry Uzbek titles and descriptions, not copies of the Russian ones. When you switch plugins, use the built-in import, otherwise manual settings on hundreds of pages can be lost. Review your snippets in Search Console every few months: if Google keeps rewriting your title, it probably describes the page poorly.

FAQ

Do I need a plugin to manage WordPress meta tags?

In practice, yes. Without one WordPress builds the title automatically and adds no description. Yoast SEO or Rank Math give you fields for each page and templates.

Should I use templates or write tags manually?

Combine them. Templates prevent empty fields across many pages, while the home page, services and main categories deserve hand-written tags.

Why does my page have two title tags?

Usually the theme and the SEO plugin both print them, or two plugins are active. Turn off the output in the theme or the extra plugin and recheck the source.

What is the difference between noindex and robots.txt?

Noindex in the robots tag keeps one specific page out of the index. The robots.txt file limits a crawler’s access to URLs. They are different tools.
