What BreadcrumbList describes
Breadcrumbs are the trail above a page heading, such as Home › Smartphones › Android. Visitors see where they are and can jump one level up with a single click. BreadcrumbList markup, defined by schema.org, describes the same trail in a format search engines can read directly.
One point is easy to miss: the markup does not create navigation. It only describes navigation that already exists on the page. If breadcrumbs are present in the code but invisible to visitors, that goes against search guidelines and brings no benefit.
Why breadcrumb markup is worth adding
Nobody can promise higher rankings from breadcrumbs alone. The practical benefits are still real:
- Search engines understand the hierarchy better: what is a section and what is a page inside it.
- Google may show the section path in the snippet instead of a long URL, which helps people see what the page is about. There is no guarantee, because the search engine decides.
- Category pages gain extra internal links from deep pages.
- A shopper who lands on a product page from search can move up to the parent category if the item is not right, instead of closing the tab.
How the trail is built
Most sites write the markup as JSON-LD inside a script block. It contains the BreadcrumbList type and an itemListElement array. Each ListItem has three fields: position (the order number), name (the section title) and item (the full URL of that section).
Take an electronics store. The first item is Smartphones with the section URL, the second is Android with its URL, and the third is the title of the current page. The last item can omit the URL, since it is the page itself. Numbering starts at one and has no gaps. Including the home page is optional.
JSON-LD is not the only route. Microdata and RDFa put the attributes straight into the navigation HTML, and many CMS themes do this automatically. Pick one method, otherwise reports will show duplicates.
Rules to follow
Most problems come from mismatches between the markup and the live site, not from the format itself. Keep these rules in mind:
- The markup repeats the breadcrumbs visitors actually see, including on mobile.
- The order runs from general to specific.
- URLs are absolute, use the correct protocol and preferred domain version, and carry no tracking parameters.
- Names match the section names used in your menu.
- The trail reflects real structure, not a list of queries. A section titled Air conditioners buy Tashkent cheap looks like spam.
- On a bilingual site, each language version is marked up in its own language.
When a page belongs to several categories
A refrigerator might sit under both Large appliances and Built-in appliances. The standard allows several trails on one page, but it is simpler to choose one primary category and always show it. Search engines then see a stable hierarchy, and your reports stay readable. It also fits well with the product's canonical URL.
The trail does not have to mirror the URL. A product address can be short and flat while the breadcrumbs show the logical path through the catalogue. What matters is structure that makes sense to people, not server folders.
Common mistakes
These turn up most often after a redesign or a move to a new CMS:
- Markup exists but the page shows no breadcrumbs.
- The last item points to a different page.
- A level is skipped or numbering is broken.
- URLs use http or omit www while the preferred version is different.
- The theme and an SEO plugin both output the markup.
- A deleted category is still linked in the trail.
Implementing and testing it
On common CMS platforms it is usually enough to switch breadcrumbs on in the theme or SEO plugin settings. On a custom-built site, generate the markup automatically in the template from the category tree. Written by hand, it goes stale quickly in a catalogue of hundreds of pages.
Test pages with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator, then open the breadcrumbs report in Search Console. After any change, check different templates: a category, a product page, an article and a service page.

FAQ
Should the home page be included in breadcrumb schema markup?
It is optional. Many sites add it as the first item and that is not an error. What matters is that the markup matches the breadcrumbs visible on the page.
Does breadcrumb markup guarantee a special look in search results?
No. It raises the chance that Google shows the section path instead of the URL, but the search engine makes the final call and the display can differ between devices.
Can one product have several breadcrumb trails?
Technically yes, but choosing one primary category and using it everywhere is simpler and keeps the hierarchy consistent with the canonical URL.
How do I check that the markup works?
Use Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator, then monitor the breadcrumbs report in Search Console for errors and warnings.
