What keyword search volume actually tells you
It counts searches, not people and certainly not buyers. One person may search three times, and another may type the phrase out of curiosity. Treat the figure as the scale of interest in a topic rather than a forecast of leads.
Say you sell air conditioners in Tashkent. The word «air conditioner» looks huge, yet it includes people hunting for repairs, refrigerant refills, remote control manuals or just pictures. Your buyer usually types something more specific, such as «inverter air conditioner buy Tashkent».
Broad, phrase and exact match volume
Tools such as Yandex Wordstat and Google Keyword Planner can report the same phrase in different ways, and the gap between figures can be several times over.
- Broad: every query containing your words, in any order, with any extras. The biggest number and the most misleading one.
- Phrase: queries that contain your phrase intact, possibly with other words around it.
- Exact: only that wording and nothing else. The smallest number, but the closest to real demand.
Region and language: Tashkent, Uzbekistan or both
Demand depends on geography. A beauty salon in Chirchiq will not win clients from Samarkand, while an online shop that delivers nationwide should look at the whole country. Always set the location in the tool, otherwise other countries and cities leak into the count.
Language matters as well. The same product is searched in Russian, in Uzbek and sometimes in transliteration, which gives you separate sets of numbers. Checking only one spelling understates the market.
Keep in mind that search engines are not the whole picture. Many people go straight to Instagram, Telegram channels, OLX or Uzum, and that demand never shows up in search statistics.
Seasonality and the limits of the data
Look at a full year of dynamics. Air conditioners climb before the heat, heaters before the cold, flowers and gifts before holidays, school supplies before the new term. With a single month it is easy to mistake a peak for normal and a dip for a failure.
These tools give estimates, not an exact count. Different systems disagree, small values are rounded, and some queries come from bots or from marketers checking results. The gap between 90 and 110 means nothing, while a gap of several times means something.
Common mistakes with search volume
The same errors show up project after project.
- Treating broad volume as if it were exact.
- Drawing conclusions from one month.
- Using worldwide data instead of your region and language.
- Relying on one search engine only.
- Dropping rare queries: «air conditioner installation in Yunusabad» is searched seldom, but by people ready to pay.
- Assuming first place takes all the demand: some searches end without a click, and some clicks go to ads and maps.
Turning the numbers into decisions
Search volume is for comparing queries and setting priorities, not for predicting sales. A practical order works well: collect the wordings, check exact volume for your region, look at the season, then judge intent — does the person want to buy, to learn or to repair. After that, weigh demand against competition and margin.
A query with modest demand, a healthy margin and weak competitors is often better than a popular one dominated by large marketplaces. To see what really works, tie search to outcomes: phone calls, Telegram messages, payments through Click and Payme. That shows which queries bring revenue rather than impressions.
Search volume as one input to your strategy
It is only one input, alongside your audience, your competitors and the economics of the business. The markdev team helps companies in Uzbekistan combine these into a marketing strategy: which queries to pursue, which channels to connect and how much to invest in them. FAQ
Which type of search volume should I check first?
Exact match, filtered to your region. Use broad volume only to find ideas and expand your list of queries.
Does high search volume mean many customers?
No. It only signals interest in a topic. Customers depend on user intent, competition, your position in results, price and the quality of your offer.
Why do Yandex and Google numbers differ?
The systems count queries differently, serve different audiences and round values in their own ways. Compare queries within one system and use the other as a cross-check.
Are low-volume keywords worth targeting?
Yes. They are more specific, often show readiness to buy and usually face less competition, especially in narrow niches and local services.
