What open graph meta tags actually are
They are a few lines in a page's code that visitors never see but messengers and social networks read. When a link lands in a chat, the service visits the page, finds those lines and builds a preview card from them: an image, a headline and a short description. The format most platforms follow is called Open Graph, originally created by Facebook. Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn all understand it.
In Uzbekistan this matters more than it might elsewhere. Links to catalogues, price lists, product pages or Click and Payme payment pages move constantly through private chats and group channels. In that setting the preview card works as your shopfront, and people decide whether to open the page based on it.
What happens without them
The messenger starts guessing. It may use the page title as a headline, then grab a low-quality logo, an icon or a header banner as the picture, or show no image at all. A flower shop in Tashkent can end up with a grey square in the chat instead of a bouquet, and a dental clinic in Samarkand with a fragment of its navigation menu.
The minimum set of tags
For most pages, five or six tags in the head section are enough. They need to be present in the original HTML. If a script adds them after the page loads, many messengers will simply not see them.
- og:title — the headline on the card
- og:description — a short summary, one or two lines
- og:image — the full image URL starting with https
- og:url — the main (canonical) address of the page
- og:type — website for ordinary pages, article for blog posts
- og:site_name and og:locale — your company name and the page language
The image does most of the work
A card with a strong image stands out in a busy chat, and one without it disappears. Prepare separate images for the home page, key services and catalogue sections. For articles and products, use the main photo of the page or a template with the title on it.
- Landscape format, roughly 1.91 to 1; 1200 by 630 pixels is a common size
- Keep the important parts near the centre, because platforms crop edges differently
- If the image contains text, make it large enough to read on a phone
- Use a full URL with https, not a relative path
- Keep the file light so the messenger can fetch it in time
Write the card for people, not for search
Your og:title and og:description do not have to repeat the title and description you wrote for Google. In search results a person compares ten options. In a chat, a friend or a colleague sent the link, so the tone can be warmer and plainer. Keep the description short, since many apps show only a line or two.
On a bilingual site, the tags must match the language of each page. A common mistake is an Uzbek page whose card shows a Russian headline because the template was built for one language only. Change og:locale together with the language version.
Why the preview does not update, and how to test
Telegram and Facebook cache cards. You replaced the image, yet the chat still shows the old one. That is normal. In Telegram you can refresh a preview through the official @WebpageBot by sending it the page address. Facebook offers a link debugger that rereads the page. Adding any parameter to the URL sometimes helps too, because the service treats it as a new link.
To test, view the page source and look for lines starting with og:, then make sure the image address opens in a browser. Finally send the link to your own Saved Messages in Telegram and look at it the way a customer would.
- The same logo image on every page of the site
- An image blocked in robots.txt or available only after login
- Tags injected by a script after the page has loaded
- A description as long as a paragraph that gets cut off anyway
- Tags left unchanged after a redesign or an address change
Does it affect SEO?
Open Graph does not change your Google rankings directly. A clean card does raise the chance that a shared link gets opened, and it makes the brand easier to recognise. It belongs to technical optimisation, so it is worth checking alongside title templates, canonical addresses and page speed. If you want to see how this looks on your own site, markdev offers SEO optimisation in Uzbekistan and can tidy up your link previews as part of it. FAQ
Do I need Open Graph tags if I do not run social media?
Yes. The card is built in any messenger where your link is shared, not only on social networks. In Uzbekistan that mostly means private chats and groups in Telegram.
Do open graph meta tags affect search rankings?
Not directly. Indirectly they can help, because a tidy preview brings more clicks on shared links and makes your brand easier to remember.
Why does Telegram show an old image?
Telegram caches the card. Send the page address to @WebpageBot and the preview will be read again.
What image size should I use for link previews?
A landscape image with a ratio of about 1.91 to 1, for example 1200 by 630 pixels, with the key elements near the centre.
