How retargeting works in Yandex Direct
The mechanism rests on two tools: Yandex Metrica and Yandex Direct. Metrica records what a visitor did, such as which pages they opened, whether they pressed a button, and whether they sent a form. Direct then lets you show ads to those people instead of to everyone.
The core idea is the audience condition, a set of rules that decides who sees the ad and who does not. How carefully you build it determines whether you win leads or simply pay to remind people who have already bought.
Direct's interface and campaign types change from time to time, so check section names against Yandex's current help pages.
What to prepare before launch
Retargeting without analytics collapses into showing ads to every site visitor, which is crude and expensive. Start with the basics.
- The Metrica counter is on every page and linked to your Direct account.
- Goals are set up: a lead form, a phone call, a click to Telegram, a checkout, a payment through Click or Payme.
- The goals actually fire. Send a test request yourself to confirm.
- Your site gets enough visitors for the segments not to stay empty.
How audience conditions are built
A condition is made of rules. Each rule has a source, which can be a Metrica goal, a Metrica segment or a Yandex Audiences list, plus a time window for counting actions.
Rules combine in three ways. All must be met: the person opened a service page and spent noticeable time on the site. At least one must be met: they visited page A or page B. None may be met: used for exclusions, such as people who already submitted a request.
The hotter the action, the shorter the window. An abandoned checkout stays relevant for days, a viewed service page for a few weeks.
Segments worth creating first
Do not try to cover everything at once. A few clear groups are enough to start.
- Visited the site but did not leave a request.
- Viewed a specific service or category page.
- Started checkout but did not finish.
- Already bought: exclude them from acquisition ads and use them for repeat sales.
- Arrived from a specific source, for example Instagram.
Matching the message to the audience
A retargeting ad should not repeat your search ad. The person already knows you, so remind them where they stopped, answer an objection, or make a concrete offer. Someone who viewed a pricing page needs to hear about payment terms. Someone who abandoned a cart needs to hear about delivery.
On a partner network, people are not looking for you. They are reading news or checking the weather, so keep text short and prepare images in several proportions. Cap the frequency of impressions, and refresh creatives when results drop.
Common mistakes and how to judge results
The usual problems are goals that are not configured, buyers who are not excluded, segments so small they barely get impressions, one ad for every group, and no check that Metrica and Direct are connected properly.
Judge retargeting by conversions on your goals and cost per conversion compared with new-customer campaigns, not by clicks. Remember that retargeting finishes the work of other channels, and check leads against your CRM to see how many became customers.
When Meta Ads is the better fit
If your customers spend more time in Instagram and Telegram than on websites in Yandex's network, the same segmentation logic carries over to Meta Ads. Audiences of site visitors and of people who engaged with your account work on a similar principle, and the creative formats suit short reminders well.

FAQ
Do I need Yandex Metrica for retargeting in Direct?
Yes. The Metrica counter and its goals are what separate a visitor who left without a request from one who already became a customer.
Why exclude people who already bought?
Otherwise you pay for impressions to people who no longer need the offer and annoy existing customers. Give them a separate campaign with a repeat-purchase offer instead.
What if too few people fall into a segment?
Extend the time window, merge similar pages into one condition, or add other traffic sources. Direct shows an approximate audience size when you create the condition.
How do I know retargeting pays off?
Compare cost per conversion in retargeting and in acquisition, then check in your CRM how many leads turned into paid orders.
