Search Engine Results Page (SERP): What Google Shows

A search engine results page, or SERP, is what Google shows after someone types a query. It is no longer a plain list of links: ads, maps, answer boxes, questions and video all compete for attention. Here is how to read it and where a business in Uzbekistan can realistically appear.

Why the search engine results page is more than ten blue links

Business owners often say, "we are on the first page," and mean a single line among many. The person searching sees the whole screen: ads at the top, a map with addresses, a ready-made answer, related questions, images. Attention is split across all of them, and your organic link may sit below the first screen on a phone.

So a better question than "what position are we?" is this: in which blocks of the SERP do we appear for the queries that bring customers? The answer changes both strategy and budget.

The main blocks of a SERP

The mix of blocks depends on the query. Some searches return mostly links, others are dominated by a map and ads. The usual elements are:

  • Ads. Paid listings above and below organic results, bought through Google Ads and marked as sponsored.
  • Organic results. Links with a title and description, ordered by the algorithm. They can be enriched with ratings, prices or sitelinks.
  • Map pack. Shown for local intent, such as "dentist in Yunusabad" or "phone repair near me."
  • Featured snippet. A passage lifted from a page and shown as a direct answer.
  • People also ask. Related questions that expand into short answers with a source link.
  • Images and video. Separate strips, most visible in visual niches such as furniture, fashion, renovation and food.
  • AI-generated summary. For some informational queries, a synthesized answer appears above the results.

What it means for different kinds of business

For a clinic, salon, car service or cafe, the map often matters more than the website. The searcher sees the address, phone number, reviews and opening hours without clicking anything. What wins there is a carefully completed business profile: the right category, real photos, accurate hours, working contacts and genuine reviews.

For an online shop serving the whole country, organic results and well-built product and category pages carry more weight. Informational queries like "how to choose a laptop" are increasingly answered by summaries on the page itself. Clicks on such articles are harder to win, but commercial pages with prices, terms, delivery details and a clear order form become relatively more valuable.

For services with a long decision cycle, the questions block is useful. If your page answers a customer's concern clearly, it can appear there even without a top organic position.

How to audit your own SERP in one evening

Pick ten to fifteen queries you would like to receive enquiries from. Open an incognito window so personal history interferes less, and for each query note whether ads appear, whether there is a map, whether a questions block is shown, and who holds the top spots: competitors, aggregators, marketplaces such as Uzum, or classifieds like OLX.

Repeat the check on a phone, because that is where most searches in Uzbekistan happen and where top blocks fill almost the entire screen. Also compare queries in Russian, Uzbek and transliterated spelling. The results can differ noticeably.

Choosing where to aim

Once the table is filled in, weak competition becomes visible. Sometimes the top organic spots belong to large platforms and fighting them is not worth it, while the map is nearly empty. In that case, start with the business profile and reviews. If the questions block is answered by random pages, write a section with a direct answer in the first lines and clear subheadings.

Ads and organic search do not replace each other. Ads bring traffic immediately but stop when the budget does. Organic positions take longer to build but do not charge per click. Most businesses do well keeping both and watching which queries pay back.

FAQ

What is a search engine results page?

It is the page a search engine returns after a query. It can contain ads, organic links, a map, answer boxes, related questions, images and video.

How are organic results different from ads?

Ads are paid and labelled as sponsored. Organic results are ranked by an algorithm based on relevance and page quality, and you do not pay for each click.

Does a local business still need a website if it appears on the map?

Yes, but for queries with a location the map often brings more enquiries. Complete the business profile first, then use the website for detail and lead capture.

How often should I check my SERP?

Checking your main queries every month or two is enough. New blocks and competitors appear over time, so a one-off audit goes out of date quickly.
