Two checks: Meta policy and local law
Meta does not ban alcohol ads everywhere, but it allows them only where local law permits and only for audiences above the legal age. In some countries such ads are blocked entirely. The exact requirements sit in Meta's advertising standards and get updated, so read the current version before you launch rather than relying on memory or old blog posts.
The second check is the law. Uzbek advertising legislation places serious limits on alcohol promotion, and the internet is not exempt. A sponsored Instagram post is still an advertisement. If a moderator waves your ad through, that does not make it lawful, and responsibility stays with the advertiser.
A note of caution: this article is a general overview, not legal advice. Laws and how they are applied change, so check the current text on lex.uz and agree your format with a lawyer who handles advertising.
What Meta's review actually looks at
The review judges the ad as a whole: image, video, copy, button and the page the link opens. The system does not ask whether you meant to advertise alcohol. It spots signals of the category and applies restrictions.
- Bottles, glasses of drink or a bar shelf with labels in the frame
- Brand names, cocktail names or wine and beer varieties in the text
- Offers such as a free second cocktail
- Encouraging heavy drinking or linking alcohol to success or driving
- A landing page that opens straight on the bar menu
- People who look underage near drinks
Why a restaurant with no alcohol in the ad still gets rejected
A familiar scene in Tashkent: a restaurant films a clip about its summer terrace, and a glass of wine or a shelf of bottles sits in the background. To a guest that is atmosphere. To a reviewer it is alcohol content. The ad is rejected or limited, and repeated cases hurt the standing of the whole account.
Be careful with non-alcoholic versions too. If the brand is tied to an alcoholic one, ad systems may review it under similar rules, and the law may treat such promotion as indirect alcohol advertising. This is a point to settle with a lawyer, not to test with ad spend.
What to promote instead of bottles
Most venues have plenty to attract guests beyond the bar list. Guests will find the drinks menu when they arrive, so the ad can lead with other things:
- The kitchen, signature dishes, the chef and plating
- Atmosphere, interior and the view from the terrace
- Live music, themed evenings, banquets and corporate dinners
- Easy table booking by phone or Telegram
- Food delivery and set menus for groups
- Coffee, lemonades, a tea list and other non-alcoholic drinks
Organic posts versus ads
An ordinary post on your profile is not an ad, but it still has to follow community rules and the law. The Boost button turns a post into an advertisement with every requirement attached. So do not boost posts where a drink is the centre of the frame, even if they earned plenty of likes organically.
A practical fix is a separate shoot for advertising. Film dishes, people at the table, the interior and the stage, and check that no bottles hide in the background. Keeping two folders of material helps: one marked safe to promote, one marked organic only.
Pre-launch checklist
Run through this list before you submit anything in Ads Manager:
- No alcohol or labels in the frame
- No drinks, brands or drink promotions in the copy
- The landing page does not open on the alcohol menu
- Age targeting is set correctly
- The format is confirmed by a lawyer
- No workarounds such as borrowed pages, hidden text or a different ad category
Shortcuts to avoid
Getting around restrictions with neutral-looking pages, hidden text or a mislabelled category usually ends in a blocked account and legal exposure. If the law does not allow a product to be advertised, moving the same ad to another channel solves nothing. A stronger path is to build the venue's image around food, service and events.

FAQ
Can I advertise alcohol on Instagram in Uzbekistan?
Meta allows it only where local law permits, and Uzbek legislation sets serious limits. Check the current text on lex.uz and consult a lawyer before running anything.
What can a restaurant with a bar promote instead?
The kitchen, atmosphere, events, booking, delivery and non-alcoholic drinks. Keep bottles, brands and alcohol offers out of both the frame and the copy.
Can I boost a post that shows a glass of wine?
Better not to. Boosting turns it into an ad, and review may place it in the alcohol category. Shoot separate ad material without alcohol.
Does Meta approving my ad protect me legally?
No. Platform review and the law are separate checks, and the advertiser remains responsible for legal compliance.
